Just some thoughts here if anyone finds it helpful.

I've had a Maverick Eco 4X Lariat on order for almost a year with delivery in a week or so. I've never even driven one. Lately my wife and I have been driving other trucks to get a feel for what we want and are looking for, for when it comes time to test drive our order. I need a 4x since I can't really call in if roads are bad due to snow, and do regular home remodeling. Full size pickups too gigantic for us. Not in a rush to get one, currently we use a very old minivan for moving trash and lumber, if it dies thats when we need a pickup.

My wife is not thrilled with the electronic parking brake and manual release under the dash. This seems to be introducing unneeded complexity when one needs to tow or carwash. She also hates the shift knob. Not sure what I think about it, I've heard people complaint that they bump it by accident.

Santa Cruz: Overly complicated cockpit controls, bed too small for weekend cargo runs like plywood sheets. Wife hates the look.

Ridgeline: Again, overly complicated controls with some screen controls better suited for knobs, no skid plates. I don't go pro off-road but have slid off road in snow before where the plates would have mitigated damage.

Tacoma: Drove the off road Pro model. Nice interior and bed, interior feels well-built and tight, awful ride, poor engine performance, transmission shifting everywhere on test drives highway and around town

Frontier: We really liked this vehicle, drove a Pro4X. Quiet, wife said ride was like in her new Sienna. I really liked the body cameras that would come in handy parking in our cramped driveway and in the city. Annoyed I have to get Pro4X to get Apple Play and skid plates. Great logical interior, crappy mileage compared to Maverick. I like the appearance a little better than the Mav. Zero gravity seats, if effective, will be great on long commutes. Not sure about the Mav seats.

If we take the Maverick out for a ride and decide not to go with it, we'll probably go with a Frontier and take our time looking as there does not seem to be a shortage of this pickup compared to the Mav. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has owned both.

I agree with your frontier comments. Its a beautiful little truck. However only one of these trucks are remotely close in price to the maverick… so i dunno if ā€˜competition’ is the right word. Ford isn’t really competing against anyone with this truck. Its the cheapest by such a large margIn. But these are some nice thoughts on other options for people who aren’t price capped at maverick vs civic lol

To get a feel, if you can find one, a Bronco Sport. About as close as you can get.

I don't know about both, I love my Maverick. I agree the Frontier is a nice looking truck, but is comparable to the Ranger, not the Mav. I had a new Nissan truck a while ago. Didn't last long til it was falling apart after only a couple of years. Had my Ranger for 20. I'll stick with Ford.

Manual release under dash?

The rotary gear knobs works really well IMO, takes a bit to get used to but I like it

Interesting you say that, I've had mixed reviews on Nissans. I had an 87 Nissan that was great, may its changed. I have a 2006 Ford Focus thats been overall reliable.

My understanding is that if one needs to get towed, the vehicle has to be forced into neutral manually with that dash release.

If you are comparing vehicles the ford ranger might suit your need and cheaper than other's you have tried, decent power & fuel economy as well much easier to get? I have never had any car wash problems with my fx4 just like any other car (don't use the auto stop hold button). i love my fx4 maverick but the skid plates are not steel if you need protection. it's all upto your needs/wants and price point - good luck with your decision.

You’re going to love the maverick…sport mode is fun. I’m in eco most of the time, because I like the shift points best.

I was most surprised how the different modes affect my driving style and enjoyment. The Mav handles great and you can definitely feel the torque vectoring kick in when pushed hard. Eco mode makes me feel grandpa worthy; nice and easy, no rushing around.

My main gripes would be the smallish seat bottom cushion, weird touch points, a goofy CarPlay glitch here and there, and seat height adjustment.

I didn’t mind the shifter as much as I thought I would. The mode button, traction, start/stop all feel the same, you have to look straight down to make sure you press what you need. Ford should have thought this shift, mode location out far better.

I did drive over a thousand miles as soon as I got the keys…figured most of the truck out quickly. You will drive faster than you think, so watch that speed.

Test drive one of the new Escapes. That will give you a good idea on the feel. Should have the same engine and on the same platform. I traded in my older Escape for a Mav and my first impression of the Mav that it didn’t drive like a truck at all. Wife noticed too and she’s racking up the miles on it as often as she can.
My goal was to get something similar to my 92 Ranger but the Lariat luxury is spoiling me.

I agree about driving faster than I realized. It's very smooth and easily get up in speed. I've been practicing my "It's a new truck, officer. I'm still getting used to it." speech just in case.

As for figuring it out, I'm working on it. 1000 miles, but I still see some symbol coming up that I don't recognize. Is the truck just happy to see me, or did I turn something on or off? Manual helps, but I see a red whatever on the dash screen and the manual is only black and white.

Not meaning to be rude, but nonsense.

Recently had to have a F150 towed. Shift cable broke while in gear. Tow truck guy put plastic 'skis' under rear tires and pulled it right up the tilt bed. They do it all the time. Neutral override is nice, but not necessary.

Cheers!
