I am picking up my Maverick tomorrow. I had always planned to take it on a long weekend trip this weekend (800+ miles round trip over 3 days), but because there was a 2 week shipping delay, that trip now falls into the break-in period. No towing or hauling, but I will be be doing interstate speeds up to 75-80 mph. Should I skip taking the Maverick this weekend and take my wife's minivan, or is that just overly cautious?

The general rule is that you don't want to run the engine at a steady RPM for long periods during the break in period, instead varying the load and RPM if possible. Whether this is still as important as engine production methods and quality get better ?

Cheers.

Just take the curvy way and vary your speeds and RPM. You will enjoy your new truck and the drive much more than a drone on the freeway. Might take an extra hour or two but that's just bonding time.

If you are asking the question, then you suspect it is a possible high risk.
Here is what Google says.
How do you break in a hybrid car? Break-in rules apply to all cars, including hybrids. To break-in a hybrid car, it is recommended to not use cruise control and avoid high RPMs, hard braking and towing for at least the first 600 miles.

Not me buying my Maverick from a dealership 400 miles away and having to tow the trailer all the way back 😄

I took mine from Maine to Philadelphia and back with 200 miles on it, average cruising speed was about 75-80mph. I think you should be fine OP. Just don't expect the greatest gas mileage with the engine breaking itself in.

Besides varying speed now and again, whenever the spirit moves you, add 10mph to your speed, then take your foot off the accelerator pedal completely. Allow the vehicle to slow down to 10-15 mph slower than your original speed, foot completely off the pedal. That should(perhaps, it worked in the past) allow the manifold vacuum to increase and potentially pull some oil down the valve guides, and also pull some oil up past the rings to give a bit of lubricant to the rings, and allow them a short cooling period.
I did that a long time ago on my new Mercury when it had 50 miles on the odo, during a 2000 mile break-in. Every 50 miles of so I would 'relax' the engine for a bit(at least during the first 500 miles) and it has no lasted to 250k.
It is an exaggerated version of 'varying your speed', with the added benefit of providing some upper cylinder lubrication and a bit of piston ring cooling. Perhaps.

Now with 3 months in service and a total of 1,250 the truck is dead on averaging 30.09 MPG. New tires replaced a 700 miles seem to ride Alot better and at least don't have divots and bumps on the side walls of All 4.
I really like this truck. I also have a 2022 F-150..5.0..crew cab...it doesn't get driven much since the Maverick is here.

That's how we broke in our 327, 429, etc. builds in the early 60's.

Here is a road trip series I have been watching that might help. I want to take a lot of trips.

If your trip involves hills, even mild ones, the engine will stop, start, and change loads & RPM naturally, for a good break-in. The two electric motors, one on the sun gear and the other on the ring gear, blend with the engine on the planet carrier of the planetary gearbox system.

If the terrain is very flat with no traffic or stop lights, and the engine just drones away at one load and RPM, then maybe vary the speed + and - 10 mph as traffic allows to help break-in.
