Is it showing the average MPG for the current gas in tank? I see it go up or down by tenths of a gallon.

It's an average since it was last reset.

I have mine set on "instantaneous". 0 to 999.9 then all electric. You can see when ice is charging battery and pushing car or Regen pushing car. Easy to tell when it's time to 30-40% power up incline and accelerate or just 9.5% and almost if not hold speed.

If you never hit reset it holds about 5000 miles of data. With that many miles, about 10 tanks more or less, your current driving won't move the average much.

The memory is not infinite.
So the oldest data is lost.
At least in XL and XLT. Not sure about how Lariat works.

I have not reset the one trip meter since the day I got it & at 16,000 miles & 2-1/2 years it's still has the average from new, which is now at 29.6.

You misunderstood.

The "invisible spreadsheet" inside the truck only holds 5000 miles.

The oldest memory is dropped to make room for the newest once full.

If you drive the same way all the time, you'll never notice because your average is always the same within 0.1 or 0.2.

But do something drastically different like tow a trailer for 10 tanks in a row like I did, and the "towing average" of 20 MPG totally erases your light duty average of 40 MPG.
