I never heard the term pre knock before and I've only been doing this for 40+ years.
The only place I recall seeing it used in in discussions of engines, such as Northstar, which are watching and adjusting for it. It's not, I suppose, a "technical term", but it's a useful handle for what's happens in the transition area between "good" and "bad" areas of operation--particularly by amateurs.

A google search for

"pre-knock" engin timing

returns pages upon pages of sites using this term for this condition.

Non-ethanol gas is available but is 40 cents to a dollar or more depending on the station. The gas from from this will yield slightly higher MPG. In my area the cheapest is 60 cents higher cost and the most expensive is $1.09 a gallon more. A older vehicle like my old Ford Falcon only runs this and since the alcohol has a bad effect on the rubber parts of the carb and fuel pump. I have run the non ethanol in the Maverick but I found almost a 3 MPG difference. The Maverick is 2.0 liter.

I’ve had about 4 turbo cars so far in my life and the owners manuals said to always use premium. Other cars I’ve owned mostly all required just the regular octane. Just one VW I had would only take regular, I put in premium once and it didn’t like it. Would shut off at a light or in traffic.
I just follow the manual when possible.

I know it is ok to use regular gas, but it says in owner manual that in the summer you may have to use premium. My thought is to alternate between the two at fill ups. Thoughts?
I think towing is supposed to benefit from premium, but we tow a 3100 lb boat and I have never used premium in the 3 years we have owned our maverick. Not needed i.m.o

Those mid grades are often the least purchased fuel.
So !
That fuel has been in the underground tanks much longer.
It's Ethanol fuel,
It sucks up water,
Not this boy, Not In my Ecoboost,
Ever.
Regular works fine but I like 93 octane NON Ethanol. I like to call it 'Real Gas'
I'm paying $3.49 a gallon.
It smells atrocious btw :D

Pay me no attention, I'm not right, In the head :'P

I read the "mid grade" is just mixing the regular and premium..
True i talked to a Tanker Truck Driver when he was filling Tanks at the Gas Station. He said the same thing there's actually no 89 Octane it's a Mixture of 87 and 93.

I see a world of difference between 87 and 93 octane in my ecoboost. I was very surprised by the difference and won't be going back. It's worth the extra $ for me to have the truck run much better and not have to worry about as much carbon build up.
Car & Driver Jul 2019 Fuel Octane Test 2019 F-150 Limited HO Twin Turbo 3.5 Eco Boost 87 Octane 360 RWHP and 463 lb.ft RWTQ and with 93 Octane 380 RWHP and 475 lb.ft RWTQ FWIW they drained the tanks for a fair test of both octanes.

I've had my 2022 ecoboost XLT AWD for 2 years now and I only used premium gasoline one time. Didn't notice any difference. My truck is very quick & responsive. Only time I'll use premium is when towing.
You would have had to run your Tank almost to empty to notice the difference. Otherwise you were not running 91 or 93 octane as it was mixed with 87 octane.

3 mpg better or worse with the non ethanol in the 2.0?
