From my observations it saves a few tenths of MPG. I used it quite a bit early on to experiment. As others have noted it mutes throttle response and shifts earlier. I really don't use it anymore, but if I remember I use it when in traffic, otherwise no.

I was surprised the first time I tried Eco mode how sluggish it is, I thought something was wrong. The fact that it does not default to the last mode you used seems silly.

it would be cheaper to just move out of California.
Even with a normal pay reduction. In 70's I refused a job in California at 22% higher pay because it penciled out to 9.6% reduction in spending power. Plus also had 30-35% increased commute time each way.
