Tailgates are surprisingly easy to completely remove from the truck. On most pickup models, you simply open the gate to a specific 45-degree angle, disconnect the retaining cables, and lift the gate right off the passenger-side pivot mount. Because a thief can perform this action in under a minute, locking the handle does absolutely nothing to prevent them from stealing the entire tailgate off your truck. Thieves typically open locked tailgates by exploiting manufacturer design flaws to bypass the lock entirely, or simply by utilizing brute-force tools to smash or pry the locking mechanisms. A locked gait might slow them down for 30 seconds or so.
