I will soon be taking delivery of my 2025 XLT! As I prep for the pickup, I've been mulling around strategies to maximize the trade-in value for my current car, a 2013 VW GTI. And I keep getting stuck on this point: What levers could I possibly pull in a negotiation with the dealer, when I ordered the exact vehicle I want, and they know I want it?

I get when you're shopping for something off the lot, that you can pretend you aren't that interested in the one they have and work with the salesperson to try and bump up your trade-in value if you can't get them to come down on the price. But how could you accomplish the same thing when they know you're coming in for exactly what you ordered? Has anyone been able to get top dollar for the trade-in when you ordered your Maverick? I would expect it's a lot harder to get them to move on the trade-in value when you have already removed the "I can get this somewhere else" lever.

Some helpful context/details:
  • KBB value is $6.5k-8k for trade in, or $7.5k-9k for private sale. 110k miles, no issues, meticulous maintenance, and that leads me to believe I could get >$8k (private sale) for the GTI relatively easily. I expect the Dealer to come in at under KBB minimum.
  • I'll be using X-Plan on my Maverick, and the dealer is unlikely to go any lower on price.
  • My salesperson is quite experienced, and has a reputation for making deals happen for Maverick buyers. The dealership as a whole has a good reputation.
  • The "breakeven" point between trade-in vs private sale is about $500-700 due to the tax benefit of trade-in (meaning $6.5k trade-in is about $7k value when adjusted for tax savings - I'm in Indiana).
  • I plan to finance the Maverick initially, but then pay it off within the first 6 months of ownership.
  • I will sacrifice some cash in the name of convenience and not having to list my GTI, but not much.

Don't be surprised at dealerships no offers. The mileage isn't too bad it's the age of almost 12 years old. Dealers will probably be looking to wholesale or auction your car versus putting it on their lot.
If you're going to sell it on your own you want it to appeal to the most potential buyers. Spend $125 and have it detailed.
It will depend on how many modifications you've made to the vehicle to make it your own.
Good luck

With X-plan, you have almost zero negotiation leverage. The price is set by Ford not the dealer.
Initially, keep the VW transaction separate from the Maverick purchase ask what they will offer for it. If you don't like what they offer, go somewhere else to sell it. A VW dealer or Carvana may offer more. If you're willing to accept what they offer for the VW, then agree to the trade to get the tax savings.
Edit: You may want to get quotes from the VW dealer or Carvana first so you have a comparison for what the Ford dealer offers.

That's a good thought on going to a VW dealer. Carvana & CarMax were both under $5k, but that wasn't a surrpise to me because the vehicle is over 10 years old, which puts it in the category that neither of them really want to buy it, so the values are artificially lowered (I've seen this on many other proposed trades with both of them).

Interesting, when I run the numbers on a 2-door GTI, there's a $3K difference between trade-in and private party value. At 12 model years old, and 110K miles, I doubt that a dealer is going to give you maximum $$$.

Yeah the age and condition of your vehicle will not do you any favors. Since you're buying on X-plan any trade in is where a dealer can make some hay.

What I've done in Ohio is get my car (although always less than 2 years old) appraised at CarMax and then take that appraisal to the dealer.

In Ohio, we pay sales tax on the difference of the new vehicle less any trade allowance.

So for my 2025 Lariat AWD Hybrid on X-plan my 2024 Civic was appraised for $22,000 which if I sold to CarMax would cost me $1,705 additional in sales tax on my Maverick.

Asked the dealer to come up with something that worked for both of us. Took about 5 minutes and they said, how about $21k?

We both get to eat a little.

I always go to Carmax and or Carvana to get a price I can negotiate with, KBB is fairly worthless at least as dealers are concerned...unless they are selling, then they like to mention "below KBB". I've never had a dealer not match Carmax or Carvana, they may try to use the tax angle, with the tax savings our lower offer will match (and in fact if probably does) but if you hold firm and threatened to take you car to Carmax they always give in and match.

Ordered and waited 13+ months from a local Ford dealer I use for service on my last 3 "Ford Certified" cars. Traded my 2020 Escape Titanium in with 64,000+ miles. Bought used in 2020 with only 9400 miles (was previously a Hertz rental they sold when they went into Bankruptcy). Original sticker was a little over 40,000, I purchased for 29,000+, got a little over 15,000 which was right on with what KBB was saying. Can't complain, drove for 4 years and 55,000 miles and got half what I paid for it when I traded.

I have had good experiences with Facebook Market Place on resale of two vehicles privately.

I wouldn't bother trying to trade it in. Just private sale it. It takes a bit more effort, but you'll generally come out an easy 15-20% ahead.

The dealer will low ball you in almost every case. Back in 2023, buying with and A-plan, my dealer trade offer was about $5K lower than my lowest acceptable price. I said no, wrote a big check, and I privately sold my 7 year old VW Touareg TDI for about the same as the big check I had to write, so I was happy. It did end up taking 2 months to sell though. My sale price was still well below KBB Private sale price. Just don't expect the dealer to ever hit those KBB trade in values unless you have a newer vehicle that is sought after. They typically won't even match what CarMax offers.

My dealer matched carmax pricing on my vehicle in less than 10 minutes. I just showed them the offer on my phone.

I was using x plan too.

I've never had a dealer not match Carmax or Carvana pricing. They might hem haw around but will match in the end.

How old was the trade-in vehicle? Over 100K miles? With my vehicle being more than 7 years old and exceeding 110K miles, that was my experience anyway. I don't trade in vehicles often because I don't buy 'new' very often.
