I have been on the fence about a new Maverick Hybrid for sometime, even went so far as beginning the process of ordering a black lariat hybrid, but decided to wait a bit. In the meantime I had the opportunity to buy a very nice used Chevy Volt for a great price. I am using it to run around instead of my 18 GMC Sierra with the 6.2 V8. I can say I really like the Volt. It is smooth, fast and over the last month I have driven about 1200 miles and used a total of $20 worth of gasoline and about $18 worth of electricity. The car has been giving me 48 - 50 miles of range on electricity, this is about all I need to cover my driving on most days of the week. I still use my GMC to tow our travel trailer, haul my quad and take stuff to the dump, etc and I dont see any substute for the cabability of that truck in the near future. That said, I have gone from putting about 1500 miles a month on the truck to perhaps an average of 300 (which still costs me twice as much in fuel/electricity as the Volt). This experience with the Volt has convinced me to wait until the Ford (or some other offering in a small truck from say GM, mabie Toyota) comes out with a plug-in type hybrid with at least 40 miles of range. I really like the initial usability and economy of having full electric combined with decent overall range and freedom afforded by the gas engine component. Personally I am going to hold off for now and see what is offered in the future. Not saying the Maverick is not a cool truck in its current hybrid form, it certainly is for the most part, I just want a bit more electric capability after experiencing what its like to live with it.
