Consumer Reports downgraded the Hyundai Santa Cruz due to reliability and owners complaint to a “60”. It is no longer “CR Recommended “. The Mavericks, both Powerboost and Hybrid are still “CR Recommended “,at 74 and 69 respectively. The only other pickup recommended is the Honda Ridgeline at 79.

I'm genuinely curious why you feel this way about Consumer Reports. Care to share?
I haven't kept up with Consumer Reports in awhile. But i think they couldn't keep up, then sold your data or something like that.

Some people are negative about CR's ratings because they emphasize their readers' reviews (customer satisfaction), safety features, drivability and reliability. Less on performance, style and popularity which is what you'd see in Car & Drivers Truck of the Year. I like having information from both sources.

I have used CR for years. I don't always take their recommendations when I buy but I use their analysis to determine what is important to me and what the shortcomings are.

In their annual April Buying issue, along with other items like appliances, they list the frequency of repair for used cars for multiple years in various categories. If you are not a subscriber, you can find the Annual Buying issue at the public library.

I don't care what someone else thinks about style, which also means I don't care about popularity (unless it's in reverse - I'd rather not be driving the exact same thing as half the other cars on the road). I care what *I* think about style, but I don't need any reviews to help with that.

Meanwhile, safety features and reliability ought to matter to everyone, I would think.

But nobody makes us pay attention to any of these sources. What's often better than the overall rating is the details that go into the rating, which often costs extra to get access to.

The most important info to me, when I car shop, is reliability. But not everyone would agree (but that is ok).

Yeah that didn't happen.

Here's the road test in the 2025 Maverick by CR.

They do reliability surveys each year of their subscribers, which is valuable information. They accept no advertising, so there's no risk of bias. They buy all of what they review outright, and none of the sellers know it's CR until after the fact, if ever. So there's no risk of getting a vehicle that has been cherry picked like commercial review rigs.

I'm a subscriber to their website but not their magazine, and I consult it regularity on purchases. In this day of paid promotion being everywhere, fair outlets like this are rare.

Just an observaion on CR.
From what I have seen over the last two years.
Their views seem, as the saying went....
"Change Like the Wind"

This week, Mavs are great. Next week there... 💩

Initial reviews of new products don't have the benefit of long term results and experience with quality control issues that only pop up over time. It's the inherent downside of the whole time being linear thing.
