It's opinion. And not a very professional article to be sure.

But the $20,000 Maverick is like the $35,000 Tesla so well advertised and not delivered: "Vaporware".
When Ford started taking orders for the Maverick it was $20k for a base model with nothing added. The taxes and fees and all that is nothing to do with Ford. Idk if they are still advertising it at that price but then again I don’t think Ford is advertising a product they can’t keep up with the demand for.

It could also be a tool to start building a loyalty base with buyers who have just started earning income.
I fit this pretty well. I bought my first ford (a used Escape) and really loved it. I actually wanted a Honda to begin with. The moment the email came out announcing the Maverick I immediately put my order in even though I didn’t need a new car.

Im now the kind of locked in customer that actually wants an upgrade but I’m too darn satisfied with the Maverick to switch to a Bronco.

I was a bit dismissive of this article (after having read it completely) in my post above but I want to clarify that I don't mean to be dismissive of your post - I appreciate you sharing the article with us here.

I think it's interesting that people suggest Ford doesn't want to produce more Mavericks but I don't think it's accurate. Case in point - Ford added a third shift at the plant. They literally put more investment into doing exactly the opposite.

Would Ford prefer to sell you a more profitable vehicle instead? Well sure! But they're not new to this - they've been selling vehicles for a while now and they know that not everyone can (or will) buy the more expensive models. In fact, the same video cited by the author discusses this: F-150s are beginning to stack up on dealer lots. ...and that's a problem.

I don't know exactly what Ford's strategy is for the Maverick. Maybe it's to offer something to compete with the used truck market or maybe it's a tactic to win customers away from foreign brands. It could also be a tool to start building a loyalty base with buyers who have just started earning income. Whatever the case - I think it's a bit unreasonable to suggest that this company would introduce and then continue to invest in manufacturing more of a new product that they actually don't want to produce more of. From where I sit, it just doesn't sound like this author has really thought through his arguments.
Ford would build 500 k mavericks. Why? Because over 70% of orders are customers of Toyota Honda Nissan Volkswagen Suburu BMW Mercedes etc

Sorry, when I saw "Yahoo" in the link I did not even bother to click and watch the video. Total waste of time on anything that comes out of that place. I think I must have some wallpaper that is peeling someplace that would be more interesting and factual.

"Nobody wants a Maverick" I beg to differ lol I have many people ask me about my truck and a couple thousand are still waiting for theirs. And, hmm, didn't it outsell the Ranger? 🤡

The author seems to be taking the Maverick's success as some kind of personal offense. Thankfully, he's getting roasted in the comments on Yahoo, so I don't need to point out how wrong he is about everything.

When an author starts name-calling and/or stereotyping people, I tend to stop reading...
That's "journalism" these days. They write whatever they are told to so they can keep their dental plans.

Funny thing is, his central premise is correct - ford doesn't want to make too many of these and they have no intention of ramping up production much beyond current levels. The sweet spot for them is to keep production just short of demand so they don't get stuck with a bunch of stock they can't move. With lower margins on the mav, they can't afford to.

They don't want to cannibalize sales from rangers and f-150's and they don't want to concentrate resources on a lower margin vehicle. Why would they? Of course it's just business!

What the bozos writing these clickbait articles always miss is this: the maverick fits a particular market niche and fits it very well. People aren't buying it to tow or haul big stuff, it's for weekend warriors who need a daily driver first and some light tow/haul capability second.

Indeed. Sad.

My first "real job" was as an enlisted US Navy journalist. It pains me to read much of what is written today.

The author just mad and making clickbait. I think his characterization of Mav fans is completely unfair, based on the users on this forum. Of course there are bad apples in any group.

His points comparing a mav to minivan are interesting to me, having thought about it and owning both myself. Its true the minivan is better for passenger quantity and comfort. The minivan can haul a ton of stuff, with seats removed, probably more than a mav, and all enclosed. But that is also a disadvantage, if you want to keep dirty, smelly things apart from the cabin, or you need more height. A truck is easier to load things as well.

A Mav with tow package will be better than minivan. Without, it is comparable. A Mav is better for offroad, especially with the appropriate package.

The author completely missed the point. He assumes bigger is better, so the Mav is useless compared to larger trucks. He is so wrong, why pay more for something you just need a small or moderate amount.

Regarding the profit margin, no doubt Ford makes more profit on larger trucks, and thus would prefer to sell them. But that profit only occurs if you actually sell them! The author agrees Mavs are selling fast and F150s are sitting on lots. That guy is just being ridiculous to get clicks.
