Hey, it could be worse. Back in the early 70s, they had seatbelt interlocks where the car wouldn't start if your seatbelt wasn't fastened. And it was against the law for garages to bypass the interlock. I think you could do it yourself, but your mechanic couldn't. DIdn't last long though.

I'm gonna need your source on that Silverado thing because I highly doubt that is even legal.

Hopefully the "coast to a stop when a seatbelt's unbuckled" will turn out to be just exaggeration on my part, but I could see it happening at some point.

Yeah, some version of it is coming back. And it's anyone's best guess when it becomes opt- out instead of opt- in, and from there goes to illegal to disable.

The "safety first" crowd is in charge, and they're not going to be happy until you're safe.

Considering that insurance companies don't like paying out claims, and car owners don't like paying insurance premiums, I suppose the "safety first" people at IIHS are just doing what's asked of them by reducing accidents that cost money.

Seatbelt minder makes no sense. I don't know a single person who doesn't wear a seat belt.
Then the idiot floor of your friends and neighbors is higher than most.

We used to have to fight my brother to put on his seat belt. As an adult. He only started wearing it regularly and without prompting after he had his son. I think considering the safety of someone else, along with the heavy reduction in drinking, is what finally got to him.

The nice thing about them is you know if passengers in the back aren't buckled in. My girlfriend's friend would always tell me she was buckled in. Now I know without looking.

Reading the ratings, it really sounds like the main issue is that the seat belt reminder isn't annoying enough. And also that the standards are designed to make is supremely annoying. This is a non issue for me.

We're going about this all wrong and pushing in the wrong direction. Instead of griping that the standards are too high, we should be DEMANDING they're not high enough!!

We should be like (read the next 3 paragraphs with mock indignant rage): IIHwhatever, your standards are pathetic!!! You really wanna save someone? Then stop jerking around with that little dinging noise for 2 minutes. You wanna "encourage" people to wear their seat belt? Shock 'em! And not just the driver, EVERYONE! Start with a 100 volts and work your way up until every seat belt is buckled or everyone is out of the car.

Too drastic for you IIHwimps? I didn't think you were really committed to saving lives. Ok, this is our bare minimum. Every car MUST be wirelessly linked to an automated system that won't let the car run if a seat belt is undone. Nay, a live human must be dedicated to monitoring every car, and if said vehicle has even one seat belt unbuckled, they call 911 on your sorry butt and charge you with attempted suicide, child endangerment (if you have kids in the car), and attempted 1st degree murder (if you have adults in it).

STOP SCREWING AROUND IIHlosers!! Give me safety or give me death!! (ironic, don't you think?)

And they'll be like: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Lighten up Francis. YOU don't tell US what to do! We're going to stick with the dinging noise and the notice on the dashboard screen. That'll get you an 'A+'. We call the shots around here, and you're not going to MAKE us go one step further than we already have, so take THAT!

Problem solved.
