Yea the way the limp mode kicks in concerns me greatly. With Ford being mute on this issue figured I might as well contribute something constructive to the conversation seeing as how I have a somewhat vested interest. I'm just lucky in that I've never had this happen in traffic or at any kind of speed, unlike some other members here. But because of this, my wife is scared to drive the truck in case it pops on her and she would rather tempt fate in her old Mini Cooper that needs to go into the shop every other month for some new mechanical defect.
Completely understandable. I wonder if there are any legal options to be pursued to get Ford's attention. Very troubling.

Well, this has now happened to me three times in a row, and quite honestly I wish Ford would give us something solid to go off of, especially for those of us who don't have the luxury of dropping off the truck for an extended period of time at a Ford dealer.

So, the symptoms - start driving, and the truck suddenly throws a barrage of errors - ESC fails, gear selection at low speed message, hill assist disable, pre-collision assist disabled, ABS light is on, MIL is on, service wrench is on, and drive mode selection is disabled. Might be something else in there that's disabled, but you get the gist. Truck loses all response to gas pedal, slows down and then slams on the parking brake at like 1-2 mph. Taking the parking brake off, you have no gas pedal input and the truck just accelerates up to 30-35 mph (don't know the exact number, because every time this has happened to be the speed limit was 30 or less so I ended up just riding the brakes to keep the speed down).

The only benefit here, and why I'm also making this post, is to share that there is a bit of a workaround so you're not completely stranded in a garbage situation. And we'll get to that here in a minute.

At least with the fail this time I had my laptop with me, so fired up FORScan and managed to get a complete system read of all the failures in real time. So here's the fail right after it happened (luckily I was in a parking lot, so was able to pull immediately over into some open spots):

So what happened? Only thing that comes to mind is that the truck sat long enough that it all of the systems were able to be properly power cycled, since turning the truck off with the key doesn't actually turn the truck off right away. Reset the codes again, and this time nothing came back, code read was completely clean, MIL off, and everything was perfectly fine. Got home no issues, and then proceeded on a 150mi drive to the airport without any problems.

So what's the takeaway? If you get this fail, get somewhere safe, turn the truck off for 5-10 minutes, then proceed on your way. Obviously there's a problem, but at least you don't need to be stuck in limp mode the whole time.

Do you see a problem here? You where going 203.mph in REVERSE.
That can definitely hurt the truck,

Bad memory bit, bad math in an embedded calc routine ( happened to a plane in the Airforce, flipped upside down crossing the equator on autopilot )
Took me a while at looking at this to figure out what was going on here. Given that this code read was taken after my first attempt to clear the codes and while the truck was stationary, I think this is more of a case of a weird null value interpretation or something like that. All other vehicle speeds reported in the freeze frames show zero.

Just filed the report online. Was out of country for a couple of weeks so wasn't able to get to it right away. I'm hoping that I get some kind of fix for this from Ford, although I'm still trying to get them to update their systems to show that I actually own this truck.

Well, this has now happened to me three times in a row, and quite honestly I wish Ford would give us something solid to go off of, especially for those of us who don't have the luxury of dropping off the truck for an extended period of time at a Ford dealer.

So, the symptoms - start driving, and the truck suddenly throws a barrage of errors - ESC fails, gear selection at low speed message, hill assist disable, pre-collision assist disabled, ABS light is on, MIL is on, service wrench is on, and drive mode selection is disabled. Might be something else in there that's disabled, but you get the gist. Truck loses all response to gas pedal, slows down and then slams on the parking brake at like 1-2 mph. Taking the parking brake off, you have no gas pedal input and the truck just accelerates up to 30-35 mph (don't know the exact number, because every time this has happened to be the speed limit was 30 or less so I ended up just riding the brakes to keep the speed down).

The only benefit here, and why I'm also making this post, is to share that there is a bit of a workaround so you're not completely stranded in a garbage situation. And we'll get to that here in a minute.

At least with the fail this time I had my laptop with me, so fired up FORScan and managed to get a complete system read of all the failures in real time. So here's the fail right after it happened (luckily I was in a parking lot, so was able to pull immediately over into some open spots):

So what happened? Only thing that comes to mind is that the truck sat long enough that it all of the systems were able to be properly power cycled, since turning the truck off with the key doesn't actually turn the truck off right away. Reset the codes again, and this time nothing came back, code read was completely clean, MIL off, and everything was perfectly fine. Got home no issues, and then proceeded on a 150mi drive to the airport without any problems.

So what's the takeaway? If you get this fail, get somewhere safe, turn the truck off for 5-10 minutes, then proceed on your way. Obviously there's a problem, but at least you don't need to be stuck in limp mode the whole time.

If the update does not successfully complete the. It needs to be reapplied. The tech most likely needs to put a 13+volt power supply onto truck while performing update.
This is a really good point. When I did my latest Sync upgrade at home, I left the truck on a tender for 24hours before performing the upgrade. Some of these hybrids seem to drop voltage pretty quickly when not connected to an outside power source.

This is a really good point. When I did my latest Sync upgrade at home, I left the truck on a tender for 24hours before performing the upgrade. Some of these hybrids seem to drop voltage pretty quickly when not connected to an outside power source.
Someone did post a memo or instruction to ford techs that required them to place at least a 13 volt supply on truck when doing updates. The reason was to insure that the BMS would not shed (turn off dome light circuit or one of many other items) during the installation. (Presumably if a circuit is off then the update will not recognize that option as being installed and won't update that function???)

Description
Our records indicate that your vehicle recently received an update to the hybrid powertrain control module hpcm software calibration. This hpcm software can result in a forced neutral condition while driving resulting in the vehicle coasting to a stop and automatically shifting to park, along with a wrench light, multiple warning messages in the instrument panel cluster and an audible chime. After shifting back into drive the vehicle will enter a limp home mode which provides limited torque at low speeds up to 30MPH.
Safety Risk
A loss of motive power can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Ford Motor Company has authorized your dealer to update the powertrain control module pcm software free of charge parts and labor.

Limp mode just happened to me 3 days ago on my 22 Ford Maverick Hybrid XL. I got the recalls done in early March. Taking it to the dealer tomorrow but talking with them on the phone, they didn't seem to be aware of any updates. Submitted my report to NHTSA.gov. Was an amazing truck up until this point. What a pain all these recalls are!

I don't think my truck was ID'd as due for this recall until I put in the NHTSA report.

It simply amazes me how the dealers remain completely clueless on this stuff. Come on dealerships, check your update notifications, check your email notifications. Get with the program! In an era where everything is "instant" how can you not be up to speed? If I was a service manager and I customer came to me with this complaint, the FIRST thing I would do is research any possible history through Ford updates. Secondly, I would call as many local dealerships to inquire about this and get the hell up to speed on it.

Got the re-recall notification on Ford app. But missed the first recall by a day. Got all the software recalls open before these related three. Still need those done. Haven’t experienced the limp home mode myself.
