Accidentally backed in a post and broke the red cover. Went to the dealer who quoted me $687 for the assembly and would have to leave it to have service install when it was received for an additional cost. Got the Part # from him. He said don't buy online as they're not the same as factory. Located the sealed beam whole unit on Amazon with the same part # for $199. Took me 30 minutes to install.

It would sure be helpful if you could post the link just in case others may need to replace a taillight.
Thank You

Sounds like a typical dealership story. You pay for the convenience, assuming it's convenient at all. Also dealerships take advantage of those that don't know any better than to take their vehicle, well, to the dealership for repairs.

When I worked at a dealership, we had one customer who we joked was hiding from his wife or someone because he would take his car to the dealership for literally everything. Tires need air, windshield wipers need replacing, etc.

A guy I used to race R/C cars with was mentioning how his Porsche 911 GT2 RS wouldn't start one day. He didn't want it towed by any random AAA-partnered company, so he called a tow company that specializes in towing race and exotic cars. Got it towed to the dealership and turns out the battery was faulty. $900 later and he was back on the road. (He's actually a really humble guy and helps out the kids at the track in both driving and repairs. But I'm sure he's so wealthy that $900 is a rounding error).

Like those F-150 taillights with the radar sensor capability retail for $1280 or so from Ford. You can get a Chinese knock-off for $200 or so on Amazon or eBay and just swap the radar sensor over.

Hell I took my Nissan Frontier in for a warranty repair on the rear axle. The vehicle had wheel locks, but I didn't get a key from the previous owner.

I asked how much they'd charge to "break" off the wheel locks, knowing very well that any reasonable dealership has a master set of McGard and Gorilla keys. They quoted me something like $180 (an hour of labor). I said no thanks. The wheel locks were not damaged when the vehicle was returned, so clearly the dealership had a set of master keys. I just removed them myself with a extraction tool.

Similar story for dealer parts departments. I wasn't sure which of literally 10 variants of a part I needed for a Toyota based on that dealership's online parts store, so I called the parts department to ask. The very helpful person pointed me to the right one, and even told me to order it through the website and do in-store pickup to save shipping. The website and the dealership run on two different systems and he cannot price match "their" (actually hosted by a third party) own website with the system at the parts counter.

Tail light is two screws and a pigtail. Charging you $687 for hardware only and adding a charge on top for labor is bonkers. When a guy backed into me and cracked my Lariat tail light, it was only $350 on eBay...

Too bad all dealers wouldn’t see these posts and figure this stuff out! But, $ matter.

I went to my Ford dealer (purchased two trucks from them) to enquire about buying some factory alloys and Michelin winter tires, plus sensors, balance, and install.
I actually have the printed quote I was given by the parts department. It was just over $6000 CDN. He had quoted the wheels at over $1200 each.
I guess he though I was stupid, but I thought he had made some kind of mistake. When I went to a tire shop I asked if they could guess within $2000 how much the Ford quote was. They supplied new takeoffs, Michelin tires, sensors, balance and install for just under $1800. Still pricey, but I don't like steelies.

Well that's key right there. The dealership quoted you for new wheels, whereas you ended up with used ones. And as unfair as it is, parts sold at retail are almost always more expensive than those sold to other businesses (body shops, independent repair shops, etc).

One of my local Ford dealers does a lot of Dealer-Installed Accessories (DIAs) and sells OEM takeoffs in the parts department for fairly reasonable prices.

Same problem here- is there a video on how to swap it out?
