Hi I searched the forum and read page 184 of the manual but am still confused by the l button on the shifter. If I read this right it's kind of a dual purpose. If in neutral and pressed it locks the transmission in neutral for 30 minutes. But if depressed while in drive it locks it in first gear. Is this correct?
This is for an Ecoboost.

Well you're half right. It doesn't really have a "first gear", and acceleration and cruising in "L" are the same in as in Drive. It's only when you let off the gas that you feel the difference. It kicks it into maximum regenerative braking to slow you down...thus making it feel sort of like one pedal driving. One caveat however....once the HV battery is fully charged, it resorts to engine braking to achieve the effect....and that can get pretty noisy.

Oops...I just realized you are talking about the Ecoboost. So kindly ignore everything I said. 😉

It doesn’t lock it into first gear, but it holds lower gears further into the rpm range. It’s useful for things like engine braking down a long steep hill.

That being said, I haven’t used it once.

I should have clarified that thought they operated the same.

That's the way I read it. Low gear when selected while in drive. Temporary Neutral when selected while in Nuetral. Good to know if you are going thru a carwash.

However, if you need to tow the Maverick you should follow the instructions on page 187 and engage the Manual Park Release.

Thanks for the tip on towing. While I love all the safety features in the truck. Think this automatically going into park is a bit to much. The car wash I like to use the attendant drives it into the wash. Probably can't trust em to do it right. While the wash has a real system that pulls it though. They use a bunch of guys with rags to wash the car. Do a good job too.

Hint:

At any car wash you are allowed to stay in your car, if you wish, even if it is not standard.

I did this with my 2005 hybrid because they were so new back then.

I will ask. Don't think it will be an issue. Thanks.

I have a 22 Ford Maverick hybrid-in a car wash, in neutral, foot off brake, drive assists off--truck went into reverse on its own -not once but twice...switched from neutral to reverse then neutral...twice..the gear knob showed it was in neutral the whole time.

I am a novice here but I just put the truck in neutral at the carwash. Works fine every time. I am not fully understanding the L as it relates to neutral. Anybody want to explain this to a newbie?

If you open the door it will go into park on its own
If you put it in neutral and open the door it will stay in neutral for a half hour. Some car washes want you out of the car.

Just put the car in neutral and forget the L crap. I got a 2023 Maverick lariat I just turn the shifter to N and works fine the car was pulls it threw on its own, why change up if the N does the job great.

Not sure if you get it. When you open the door the car puts itself in neutral unless you press the L button. If you can stay in the car just putting it in neutral works. Some car washes require you to get out. May sound messed up but I worked at a car wash where the people stayed in. Put it in neutral no brakes hands off wheel. Can't tell you how many times I seen them brake steer of the track. For now I have been going to one of the robot ones where there is no tra k. They seem to work well enough.
