I've seen threads where people keep referencing the keyfob and that the truck detects and recognizes it if you get it close to the vehicle.

Is this for a specific model only, like the Lariat? I have an XL and haven't noticed any behavior that would lead me to believe the truck detected my fob and did something because of it.

I have a Lariat and Ill have to say that’s one of the more nicer features I’ve noticed and enjoyed so far.

Your XL doesn't have that option, nor the problems that a very few people have had with that option.

Our CRV has the feature touching the door handle unlocks without using the fob. And push button start. And auto lock. Still not used to having to use the Maverick fob for EVERYTHING 😂

One quirk is washing the truck with the proximity key on you is the doors will lock & unlock with not only the wash mitt, but the spray of water. I've learned remove the key from my pocket and lay out of range (or leave it inside the house) when washing & detailing. I then use the keypad should I need to access the interior while detailing.

Yeah, it's nice just reaching inside the handle & unlocking the doors & touching the top to lock.

Yes, but the non-Lariat Mavericks still use some kind of proximity in the fob for the engine immobilizer system.

I don't know if it's different in terms of what the fob is transmitting. It's definitely different for what the truck receives and how it uses the data from the fob.

BTW all of these proximity systems can be snooped with a high-powered antenna and if the communications is not properly encrypted, it can be used to relatively easily steal your vehicle. There are kits for professional thieves to do this.

Thieves have also attacked unencrypted CANBUS communication. If a turn signal uses CANBUS for example, you could pry it out, attack the bus, start the vehicle, and disable the immobilizer. There are lots of articles if you're interested in this, here's one. https://www.mayhem.security/blog/why-automotive-security-needs-to-go-beyond-the-can-bus

Pure speculation on my part, but I would not be surprised if Ford changed something in the CAN bus in this turn signal recall and screwed it up, and that's why some hybrid trucks are generating a litany of errors or becoming completely inoperable.
