Being a lithium battery, yes they can die abruptly. They hold voltage great and then fall off a cliff at a certain state of discharge, whereas alkaline will decay steadily.

Check If you have something in your pocket that can press buttons on the fob by accident as you bend and move, such as a coin or lip balm. You know if you hit panic by accident and you're in range, but if you're out of range or a different button gets held down, you can chew through battery life fairly quickly.

How long they last depends on how much you use it, how it's kept in your pocket (by itself is best), and just the battery itself. Some of them have below average lifetime. Easiest way to see if your battery is dead/dying is to by using your spare fob(s) as a comparison.

Easy to pop the fob open and change the button battery. On trucks w/ keyed ignition, open the key and you'll see a slot where the key is stored. It's on the side closest to the "Ford" logo side of the fob. Pop that open with a flathead screwdriver.

I just replaced my battery yesterday. It was only about 13 months old. Hopefully I just started with a crappy battery. We'll see.
