It updated on my '25 Lariat last week and I've seen no issues.

dumb question, if you have auto update turned off will the truck still send a pop up message and let you know it's available?

Yes, the update shows up on Fordpass and I got a pop-up on the info-center, this with my auto updates turned off!
I enabled updates and and the update installed without a hitch.

Yes--this is how I knew to ask.
"system software" flashed one of the times before the screen overwrote itself.

Would there be any compelling reason that the update doesn't show up in either the app or the unit itself with auto update turned on and a schedule set? The Mav is on wifi at home. Is there any way to kickstart an update? Are map updates separate? I know they were with Sync 2 and Sync 3, but Sync 4 is a new creature for me.

hmm.
for prior updates (25 lariat), I was able to launch from my phone. Now I don't have the option of doing so; it seems to require turning automatic updates on to get it at all!

It may be safe. I did not install it because it is change for changes sake. Nope.
It most likely has not been sent out to your vehicle yet.
This OTA is for the PCM, so there is no chance it would update the navigation maps. The nav maps require an update on either the server side (and eventually the APIM) for newer connected vehicles, or they can be stored locally on the APIM in Sync 3 and older vehicles. Your truck being on Sync 4, the maps will update on their own on the server side and will do so in the background without any OTA. On Sync 4 vehicles, once your connected nav expires, the built-in map will stop updating.
