Might be dumb question, since everything which looks easy removable is at risk to be stolen but I still ask: Is cubby door theft a thing? I wanted to drive for a while without the bed cover and was wondering if people would still this thing. I am tending to just remove it but since we will have lots of rain in the next few days I am not sure how the area will handle the rain. Is it ok to remove the door and let it rain inside?

If someone is poking around the truck there is a good chance they'll take a look. I wouldn't keep anything of value in there unless you have a hard tonneau cover.

Edit: You mean the door itself? I don't know why anyone would steal it, unless they also had a Maverick and broke theirs.

Without a cover I would def not store anything valuable in there. I assume it's fairly waterproof but again maybe don't store something moisture sensitive there long term until you know for sure

Mine is due next week and I will take a look at cubby and see if the twist closure can be replaced by a motorhome compartment lock. They come in various barrel and locking plate lengths.

Someone on the forum a while back suggested this link for installing a locking key on the cubby door:

Cool. Let me know how well it installs.

My guess would be yes - it's ok to keep the cubby door off in the rain.

Its not water proof but it does have a drain so it doesn't fill up. Its not all that sturdy. Putting a lock on it might make it more intriguing. At least if they open it they can decide if they really want the tie downs... Probably wouldn't steel the door but if they do, don't worry there will be lots of Mavericks on the street soon to get a new one... Kidding of course ;)

I'd say the door is as likely to get stolen as wiper blades, gas caps, and antennas are. All can usually easily be from any vehicle, but in the end what's the point for the thief? Just being a jerk is the only plausible reason I can come up with.

E.G. Resale it on Ebay. Those parts cost between 20-30 bucks. You would be supersized to see how many crooked people make a living with this kind of nasty stuff. it will take them less than 10 seconds to remove both parts (the door and the under cover), so might be very tempting.

I think I will just remove it and see what happens under heavy rain. Pretty sure water will get out there somehow, just hope there is nothing which can be damaged. The door itself has a seal so doubt that any water will get in with the door on.

Ok, I found my own answer. Just went out to remove the door and the underbody and looked inside. That thing looks pretty encapsulated, doubt that water will go anywhere. Therefore I will just leave the door on. Who ever needs the 20 bucks so badly that he/she needs to steal my cubby door, be my guest!
