better speakers would be nice but for the amount of time I spend in the truck
I found running the door speakers was acceptable to me
I have great headphones for quality listening at home

I'll only add that quality car audio doesn't require 16 speakers.

You can accomplish the desired results with 4-6 speakers + sub, properly amplified, tuned and time-aligned.
A lot of the oem systems count coaxial as two "speakers" so typically this isn't 16
Again, who claims it's necessary?

Some notice the difference. Some just think it's cool and are impressed by stats/specs/quantities...
The name recognition is how/why Bose initially captured a lot of the premium car audio market... Hell, most of their markets. 😆

But I would humbly suggest that anyone upgrading the system in their Maverick does care about sound to some degree. No one is replacing anything just for image. The products they might pick could be influenced by name brands, of course. Most can't sample equipment before they buy, they have to rely on suggestions from others, reviews.. and yes, brand reputation.

It's perfectly acceptable if you're not that picky about audio quality and don't want to turn it up too loud. At the high end, it's just a muddled mess. Volume is the only thing going for it at that point.

Testing out the similar base system in a Bronco Sport and turning the volume up, it was quite a disappointment. But for background listening, it was good enough.

For most people who don't listen that loudly, and especially for those who listen to more talk than radio, it's more than adequate.
Similar feelings. It's funny; when I listen to Apple Music via CarPlay some music sounds quite good, then the next album is a flat, dull mess. I think a lot of it has to do with how the songs are compressed.

Maybe that's the difference; volume. I never listen to the stereo at louder volumes, I don't ever go over level 10 on the stereo so maybe like in your case the stock system loses any kind of quality at higher volume levels. At least it's nice to be able to get away with just upgrading the speakers and seeing a decent improvement.
It's noticeable. Not life changing but noticeable. I listen to a lot of podcast type stuff and sound quality is just not that important with those.

I never said the Integra "needed" 16 speakers in 16 locations (it's not using coax). That's just what they chose to do. As to whether or not this same quality could be had with far less, I'll take your word for it. All I know is that the system sounds far better than you'd expect in a car of this price.
