I Didn't Know the Windshield Wipers Could Do That?!

What is this "snow" you speak of? I just wait until afternoon, easy when you don't get up until 11, before I go anywhere. It is very rare for us to have ice or snow that lasts more than a day. When we get it everything closes down, because no one knows how to drive, on snow, ice, wet or dry pavement. Mississippi is not kown for great drivers, especially in a college town!

Service position is a bit of embellishment. Page 86 of second manual printing discusses. Basically it's a manual way of getting wipers to a stopped position. Process is to engage accessory position (push button start on with foot OFF brake). Engage wipers and turn accessory position off when wipers are at highest position. Simllar to all other cars/trucks in existence.

I was told to never manually move the wiper arms since it'll put more strain on the wiper motor. One member taught me to do what you did beforehand which is to hit the quick pass wipe and turn the car off immediately once they hit the center of the windshield. Anytime I wash the car and it's time to clean the windows, that's the first thing I do.

However, I learned the hard way when I took it to the car wash over a month ago. I had the wipers propped up in the air but turned the car on accessory mode which caused the wipers to smack themselves back into position. Luckily, I managed to NOT crack the windshield, damage the wipers or chip the paint. It was a close call.

But yeah, it's a stupid design. German cars do it too. I once detailed an older Mercedes-Benz S-Class, same design. Complicated for the sake of being complicated.

My experience also - if wipers are left mid windshield or in the service position and the vehicle starts = wipers return to store position.

My 2025 doesn't engage the wipers on remote start, but will when you go to actually start it. I've left mine up and out for scheduled starts no problem.

Am I safe to put my wipers in this service position overnight, and then use my auto start in the morning? Or will my wipers try to out themselves back into their regular position and damage things?

Best to test for yourself - or you may not believe anyway.
But I know what happens.

Use the method described (1 wipe, truck off when pointed up) to put into service position.
Do NOT lift from windshield.
Lock up.
Use remote start from Fordpass.
Notice what happens.
Now unlock and get in.
This is where deviation may occur with keyed and push-button start.
Despite running - you have to insert key and turn.
Now notice what happens to wipers.

I'm not sure if push-button start makes you push the Start button on remote start. If it does - I'm betting the same effect.

Yep, my 23 LUX has heated park. Plus, I'm lucky enough to have covered overnight parking.

Ok, so this is probably going to be a "no-kidding, Sherlock" post to the readers but I've had my Maverick since September and really starting to love this thing. One of my disappointments has been that I've grown accustomed to past vehicles owned where the windshield wiper blades could be lifted off the windshield, with the blades in the "parked" position. It's especially important living in a snowy area as it helps to put them up before a snowstorm, and thus easier to clean later. The way they are designed is they sit well below the hood, and thus cannot be lifted. My workaround has been to hit the quick pass wipe and immediately shut off the car once they cleared far enough where they could then be pulled away.

That all changed today - by accident.

We had snow last night and I forgot to put the blades up beforehand. As I was cleaning the passenger side, I happened to push up on the wiper arm when I noticed I could push it up as far as I wanted to clear the hood line - thus, being able to lift the blade right off the windshield! It's a silly thing but that made me happy! (Doesn't take much, anyway so count me as happy as a monkey in a banana shop.) When I finished cleaning off the snow, I returned the blades down and pushed the arm back in its normal parked position.

Hope my little discovery comes in handy!

I also found this out by accident. I never saw anything in the manual about it but I concluded since Ford tucked them under the hood like that they would have designed a disengaged motor so you could move them out of the way.
Now that we're well into winter here and we're getting a fair bit of snow I tend to leave them stopped half way so they can warm up during remote start ups.

It STILL amazes me that for as long as the automobile has been around, NO auto maker that I am aware of will design wiper blades that rest at the defrost heat point so they warm up and become supple. They are always below the heat and stay covered in ice and snow.

There's always aftermarket defrosters to add in front for wiper park and back for rear defrost.

The majority of little Maverick hassle issues are found with a Google Search as with this text - To raise your Ford Maverick's wiper blades for cleaning or replacement, use the Wiper Maintenance Mode: turn the ignition on (don't start), then immediately turn it off and hold the wiper stalk up to the mist position for a few seconds until the arms move to the upright service position, allowing you to lift them off the glass. To return them, turn the ignition on and activate the wipers briefly.



Naturally the Ford manual says look for "SERVICE POSITION" but if you search the Maverick Owner's Manual for the words "Service Position" it does not exist.

95% of the info I need about the Maverick I find with a Google Search. The Bose Wiper blade UTube video told me about turn wipers on and turn off ignition when they reach the high point.

In Ford's defense - today most vehicles hide the wiper blades to minimize wind resistance. My Cayman wipers are the same.

Pour some warm water over that area. It does a great job at snow/ice removal.

Geez, that's probably one of the best ways to crack your windshield!! Never put a big temperature gradient on a windshield.

Room temperature water is warm compared to freezing, and it works a lot faster than chipping ice away from the windshield wipers which can be damaged by scrapers...
To each their own. If you feel it risky, use another method.

I've used the technique for decades and never had a problem, but then I didn't use boiling water when it was 5 degrees outside for that very reason.
Maybe I'm just consistently lucky.

Even hot air from a defroster can cause a crack, although usually a defect is also involved.
About the only truly safe method (aside from a garage) is using a cover.
