There are plenty of popups that weigh less than 990lbs. I have a Skamper 170x with a listed weight of 890. We removed the sink and grill/propane tank and some cabinets (probably about 150-200lbs worth). Depending on his model and what is inside it can change the weight fairly quick.

I guess our definition of popup camper differs. My camper has a hard roof (hard shell?), that also has an AC and pops up. Beds slide out with the canvas. The picture the OP posted looks identical to mine. If you are referring to a different type of camper than the OP posted, I dont see how it is relevant.

Heres my model (not my pic), again, hard topped:

EDIT: It is certainly not a tent either. Has couch, table, AC, cabinets, sink and stove inside (stock). I guess Im just confused a bit by your description.

Payload and towing capacity are not the same thing. If you have a trailer that weighs 2000lbs and put 15% on the hitch that's 300lbs plus your 750lbs of people is 1050lbs, which is less than the 1500lbs of payload capacity that a Hybrid XLT has.

We jumped on this one at the sub 1500lbs weight. I wouldve loved to find a skamper like that but not many for sale locally at the time we were looking.

After looking around inside for an hour or two I started pulling weight out left and right. Probably about 200lbs like you said in about 30 minutes.

Exactly. I think MrLM002 is either mistaken or confused. As mentioned, if your under the 2k towing and 1500 payload, your fine. Either way you did it and climbed. I live in Florida so it’s dead flat. I can’t wait to get out. I’m planning a trip nearby in September, I tent camp mostly but that only works for 2-3 months in Florida. AC is needed and that’s why I got this popup. I towed it previously with a 2011 reg cab 5speed 2.3l Ranger so I know this truck will handle it 1000x better. This review has helped me feel confident. 👍

The key number is the GCWR, which is 6,010 for the Mav Hybrid - that means the total weight of the vehicle, payload, and towing need to be below that.

So for the XL, the vehicle weight is 3,636, meaning you have 2,374 to work with. By the letter of the law, if you're towing the full 2k, everything else needs to come in less than 374.

Or, if you max out payload of 1,500, you can tow 874.

Glad to hear.
Once I felt the acceleration with the same throttle input as without I knew there wasnt a problem. I usually drive around at less than 10% throttle so I'm familiar with the way it pulls and it doesent change much towing.

Did my first tow today with MINI. Only a few miles to the lake and boat is about 1500 lbs but no problems. Was funny to feel the transmission "shift" while it was in tow mode.

Nice! Looks like a good fit for the truck. Factory installed hitch?

I have been towing my 17 foot boat with my Hybrid to our local lake that is about 10 flat miles from home. Boat weighs approx 1700lbs empty, so I think I'm probably slightly over the 2k limit. I have no issues with towing. The truck drives smooth and have no issues with braking, or pulling the boat out from the ramp.

Nice! I feel comfortable doing it like that for short distances.
