Hybrid high engine idle....

My 2023 hybrid Maverick starts with the engine most times at normal idle..... as I let it warm up for a couple of minutes.... about 10 seconds before the engine shuts down I get a very high speed idle..... Is this normal and why does it do this...ty

Mine does not.

Though my opportunities for sitting warmup are very infrequent now.
I used to do the Go pedal push to force the ICE on when colder for warmup - but then I never sat so long it would turn off. Too cold out, too long at idle so I already started moving with easy load.
Otherwise now I know it only uses EV mode during catalyst warmup, so I get moving for that 45 sec of time, but after that the coolant needs to get to 120 F, so still not going off quickly while I drive gently.
Usually by my first stop at bottom of hill, ICE has already turned off from warmup, and I detect no high revs before it does.
Since I'm coasting I'd hear it.

That's creepy. How does the engine know you're gonna shut it down in 10 seconds?

Do you have a scan tool or OBD adapter to confirm it's the engine RPM that goes up?

It better - or your steering wheel is going to lock!
And if going slow enough - it'll throw itself into park!

I guess the former would allow you to use EV mode a tad longer before you hit something.

I'll admit the ICE does sound a little different when it stops spinning due to not being needed while parked, compared to turning it off while running and parked.
And even that sounds a bit different than say my Rav4 turning it off.

But I've never heard a rev up before any of those.
Other sounds that are different, but not more RPMs.

There are typically only two reasons for high idle with a hybrid vehicle, the engine is being used to recharge the high voltage battery, or it's cold and it's using engine heat to warm up the catalytic converter.

Not normal. No.

Needs a check up at a dealer if it does this more than once. There's flukes here and there so one of's don't bother me. But if it repeats, not normal at all. Mine never has done this in 4 years.
