I'd like to use an online calculator to see if the .30 cents per gallon price difference in 91 versus 87 octane is worth the investment if I can improve my gas mileage significantly. I probably wait til the engine is past it's broken in period before conducting the octane experiment. I do know ethanol burns faster than gasoline and most 87 and 89 octane contains 10% milled corn.

Wikipedia says 25% of corn crops are designated for distilling. The price or corn rose 20% since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began. In my area the price of gas actually went down 5 cents in the last week.
I also forgot to add that my truck felt a bit sluggish running 87 and 91 has improved its performance a bit

I will look for link. I suspect that in use the drive motor will mainly heat the fluid.
Found this on 2017 Prius. Is interesting will look further tomorrow. Hopefully I copied link good.

Thanks James, John Kelly does a great job of explaining things! The 2017 is more complex than my 2012, wonder if this is the route Ford went.

Cheers.

Pretty much. Have shared some patents and Ford apparently wanted to modify some things, went their own way and apparently did. I haven't found John's reference (maybe it was somewhere else) to a heat exchanger where battery coolant and trans coolant went to be temp adjusted if necessary while making their loops.

In this Texas heat AC is not an option but a requirement. It hurts mileage but it either that or never take the truck out of the garage during the six plus months of summer.

I switched from Sam's Club 87 octane to Costco 91 octane. I am now getting about 480 miles on a full tank. With the temps here in Austin 100+ on a daily basis I will accept the mpg I am now getting as in the normal range. I currently have 8500 miles on the car which I received the last of Feburary about 2800 of those miles were accumulated on the trip to Michigan in mid April.

When the weather cools I will have to see what type of mpg I get with 91 octane.

On last Sunday in June I put 11+ gallons of Costco 91 and drove 336 miles in 101-106° temp with stiff headwind about 170 miles of it most at 75mph with cruise. Had ac at 73° fan speed 3 and about 650 lbs passengers and cargo. Truck reported 32.1 mpg, I calculated 31.04. I was real happy! I have 4100 miles on lariat first edition hybrid.

I just drove my Hybrid XL 272 hiway miles between 75-80 mph and filled up afterward with 6.990 gallons. Branson Mo. to St. Charles Mo, hiways 65 and 44. Outside temp at 98 degrees. Drove with A/C on and with cruise control on (added steering wheel replacement switches and programmed using Forscan). Dash showed 36.5 mpg. 272 divided by 6.99 is 38.9 mpg. Much better than the estimated 33 mpg hiway rating. I do have a bed tonneau cover. 87 octane fuel
