I think 51Mavhatter is the solo winner here. 14k+ is no joke.Pikes Peak 14,115' 23 Alto Blue. The only time I used "L" going down.![]()
Yes fully paved. Great interpretive center at the top and gift shop. Hang on to your hat or it will end up in Denver.I think 51Mavhatter is the solo winner here. 14k+ is no joke.
I'll be passing through Colorado twice next month. I think a detour is in order. I've been up there a few times but not in the past 30 years. Is it paved all the way now?

Those old EEC systems only sampled the the atmospheric pressure once when you turned the key on using the MAP sensor.Eastern US - maybe 3500 feet tops. Ran fine, didn't notice any issues.
Now, i took my 99 Explorer with the 4.0L SOHC engine over Vail pass on I 70 several years ago and it was amazing how much power high altitude sucked from the engine. I had cruise control on, was tooling along at maybe 65, it kicked down to 4th, no problem, climbing a hill. Kicked down to 3rd, well, it's steep, but I backed off on my speed. The doggone thing got down into 2nd if I recall and I was revving in the 5000 range to hold 55-60. Big power suck going on there.
Have not been up there even though it is close by. Will have to add to the list.Jeff.
Have you ever been up Mount Evans?
Sadly, it cost $15 to drive up the mountain on the timed reservation system and $5 to park at the Top If you want to walk around.
I loved Mount Evans, first it was free, accessible 24 hours, paved all the way to the top and it's higher than Pikes Peak at 14,260.
I remember back in the early '80s having the pay to drive up Pikes Peak and it was gravel halfway up.
It's pretty dramatic if you make the drive when it's kind of crappy in Denver. You end up driving through the weather as you head up and it's usually clear skies and sunny at the top. Get some good pictures of the lakes in the valley with clouds hanging over them.Have not been up there even though it is close by. Will have to add to the list.
