I keep forgetting what vehicles cost these days. Just last year I sold an 8 year old F250 4x4 Lariat with 40k miles for over $70k (deceased brother's estate).
I guess I'm basing my expectations on my own frugal, non-enthusiast, practical millionaire mindset. I even balked at the XLT trim package because I didn't think the "extras" over the XL were worth spending an extra $2800.

Sure, if someone WANTS to spend that much money on an entry level model with a higher trim package, go for it. But I think if they want to put on monster-truck tires or something and use it for four wheeling they should just go ahead and buy a Ranger or F-series for $50k instead of a gilded Maverick.

Keep in mind I BOUGHT a Mav, and I am pretty studious about vehicle purchases. At the time of purchase, it was the best thing for the money that met all of my needs for a vehicle acceptably. I would have spent an extra $5k or more for something similar (40+mpg) with a club cab and 6'+ bed, though.
My gauge for the price is not only the listing and options but; What can I get for it later when I go to sell it later.

Yes, it's always the removal value (trade in or sale) that people forget. My Transit(not Connect) was $26k new, and I can easily sell it for $16k now, likely $20k; but at $16k it cost me $1000 per year to use it. Try renting a car for $1000 for just a month! Or in this case, a full size van for just a week. I bought my '03 Sprinter for $22k and sold it for $15k over 10 years/350k miles later.

Still on the fence about selling the Transit campervan; I had planned to sell it to offset the Mav purchase price. But seeing how woefully inadequate the Mav is for comfortable camping (I'm old, I don't want to set up a tent or crawl up a ladder into a tiny wind-flapping rooftop tent...or tow a trailer around) I may keep the Transit(not Connect) for a while. It only cost' me $75/month for insurance and registration. The main detraction is having it take up space in my driveway.

In July 2022, a dealership outside of Chicago attempted to sell a Maverick Hybrid for over $50,000, which amounted to a nearly $22,000 markup over the MSRP of about $32,940. This is the kind of extreme example that likely fueled speculation about six-figure Mavericks, never found any thing higher than that one that was documented

There was a picture posted here, maybe it was a link to dealership page that is now long gone, that was marked up to around $90k. Everyone had a field day, I doubt anyone was dumb enough to pay that much.

Yes, people were dumb enough. There are always impatient buyers for new models. Some people paid over $150k for $70k Broncos/Cybertrucks.

Maybe. I know there were a few members, not sure if they post anymore, that paid $10-15k over MSRP, but I don't recall anyone admitting to paying more than that here.

Yeah, for camping the Maverick is inadequate. If the bed was just a foot and a half longer. Well, I'm gonna have to get creative. I do motorcycle camping in the summer so I'm looking for something a bit more comfortable. How about a pull-out cap?

yeah, I thought about making a prototype expanding shell that would give you 7-8' of enclosed sleeping space. Or some origami thing like the old Apache trailers. But I think I'd rather just set up a tent on the ground.

then the end of the tailgate could bite into my shins instead of my thighs!

Or do something like the back of the "Boonie Bug" which was a full camper on a VW floorpan, or the VW Minihome. You can dig articles about those and probably most of the above out of Popular Mechanics archives on google books.

ETA: dammit, misfired a neuron, Pheonix was the foldout camper back conversion, boonie bug was just a van, https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/phoenix_camper.php
