Here's the bed option i want

Don't know what all the fuss is about.
My 2005 Chev Avalanche had a mid gate like this.
It was handy but leaked as it got older. Had a smell of dirt in the truck after moving some dirt for the garden. The seals were full of dirt. And hard to clean

It looks really neat and I'm sure useful in a few situations where you need just a couple feet more. Camping with a shell comes to mind as one of these, but I would sure hate to have a load of lumber or metal tubing and need to slam on the brakes...

I'm with you, GmanGM. I used the fold-flat rear seats and the pass-through to the bed all the time in my 2006 Baja. It was super simple, gave me a lot of options for how I used the spaces and never leaked. If my Baja had all the up-to-date safety features and was a hybrid, I'd still be driving it.

That said, my Maverick is a great vehicle and I'm very happy with it.

Funny how a 2006 can have some better stuff than a 2025. My 2005 Escape hybrid was not very far off from the Maverick in many core ways. I think the Eco display monitor was actually better. Milage of 29/36 (Never really got that) was not night and day diff for 20 years of refinement. They basically took that and put a small bed where the trunk was...plus a few things. Pretty simple success formula.

Nice article and that Baja was ahead of its time.... I would love to see the simple version of this as an option as the small bed is the big downside of the small truck. The other thing the Baja had that is lacking on the maverick is the roof racks.. I am probably going to add Elevate bed racks, but for 12' lumber you will need some supports on the roof - probably a good idea for Kayacks, etc too- I hate the idea of bolting on crossbar to the roof rain gutters but probably the only option on maverick. Lastly if the don't do the midgate they should at least make the whole rear window go down like Tacoma or even this chevy video, that tinker toy size rear window option might allow what, maybe a couple 2x4's to pass through - very disappointing.

no. people build platforms for the truck bed. they can store items under the platform and sleep on top of it. as well as you have the back seat of the truck for more storage. the maverick doesn't have a midgate.

not necessarily, people use platforms, sleep on top of those, store some gear underneath (and the back seat).

Ford could take its cue from how it handles the F-150, and only offer the more desirable body stiles on the lower trim levels.

I had a 2001 Avalanche and kept it for 11 years. I thought about finding a used one and getting it if I got hit with tariffs. That didn't happen, so I have my Mav. I used my mid-gate a couple of times a year. I loaded up the bed with stuff when we traveled and dropped the seat and put my Lab on it. She loved travelling. She ended up in the passenger seat if no one else was with me. I looked at the EV Silverado, but there is still not enough infrastructure for electric vehicles, and now there is no incentive to build it.

My Honda Element rear seats could be taken out completely, and with front passenger seat pushed forward I could haul 12 foot 2x4's or 2x6's.....Like the Maverick but my Element could haul much more cargo. And imagine, with rear seats out it becomes an instant camping bed.

The Element was a car that never should have gone away.

Yes! that was my thought. I've put the tailgate down and slept at a rest stop for a little bit in a one man tent in the bed but this would be much more convenient. with the unibody it would take some engineering but I'd jump on it. For now we're just gonna have to get creative.

Instead of going crazy due to road noise for four hundred miles maybe Ford should consider the super cab idea for the maverick and add the space to the box. I know it throws economics out of the window however there are many people and commercial interests in a super cab style.

Yep, the mid-gate in my 2003 Avalanche is one of the couple of things I miss from that truck. I still like my Maverick better, but the mid-gate was a great feature.
