Catch cans collect atomized oil droplets.

I had to clean a sensor (using brake cleaner) on a Ford E350 6.8l V10. It wasn't an issue to clean the sensor. Eventually, yes, I had to replace the sensor but not sure if a catch can would've prevented that replacement. On an inline 2.5l 4 cylinder, it probably isn't necessary.

I have two on my truck. One on the dirty side and one for the clean side. They work well to remove oil from the intake air on a turbo direct injection 4 cylinder. It is to help prevent deposits on the intake valves. Hope that helps you understand the purpose.

from decades of talking to people and reading articles, I have concluded that catch-cans are a useless endeavor on modern engine systems. Perfectly cool for your 1960 F100 truck, though. Those who believe they somehow have a benefit will voraciously defend their position though, and if that placebo eases their mind, I have no problem with them installing one. Same with K&N filter on a modern vehicle (which is actually BAD for them...).

I think you were replying to me. Thanks for the information.
The reason for them is because the direct injection engine does not have the gasoline washing across the intake valves face. The dirty side catch can catches a lot of nasty gunk. More so in cold weather. The clean side not so much. I think it is good keep that stuff from leaving deposit on the intake valves. The 25 Mavericks have a new two stage fuel injection to address the issue. I am referring to the 2.0 ecoboost.

What reason did the people you talked to and the articles state that it isn't beneficial for a direct injected engine?
