China is heavily into EV because they HAVE too. The country is oil starved. They have HUGE population. EV is there ONLY choice. NOT so for the US.

Battery tech held the Lightening back, that’s all.
Battery tech is continuously advancing.
No. Lack of something called SALES held the Lightning back!

And why do so many insist on putting an "E" in the Lightning name?

Nothing accelerated as quickly as the Ford Lightening, but that's the only EV, I have ridden in. It is very quiet and the weight makes for a very good ride. Pulling a loaded trailer sucked the battery down quickly and, imo, that's what killed it. Farmers and Ranchers need a truck that performs work. On the other side, I think a smaller EV to use as a commuter would be perfect and more economical than gas. The local company that owns the Lightening also has a couple of the small Chevrolet EV. They report that they operate at 1/6 the cost of gasoline. With the current run up in fuel prices, that will make an electric vehicle to get back and forth to work, a good choice.

Very true. They are #5 in production but that’s not enough to support them. So they rely on Venezuela for… oh wait… so they get a lot of oil from Iran…. Awh crap! EV sounds good!!

Along time ago in Popular Mechanics they did an article on a home made EV, bout 1985 ish.

It goes Thustly:

A dude got a 1985 Chevy S-10.
Gutted that puppy.
Cooling system,
Exhaust system,
Engine and tranny gone.

Built a tilt bed and reinforced the frame.
I think it was a 56 VDC system, heavy lead acid 105 amp hour deep cycle batteries.
I think it was twenty for about
1600 or 1700 pounds.

Bought a used electric fork lift motor and a box of brushes. Plus the controller and mounted the charger on board,
He opened the old gas cap door in the side of the bed and reeled out his heavy duty extension cord and plugged in to any 117 V outlet.

He worked at his Dads auto parts store and did deliveries with the EV.
He could plug it in anytime he was at the store.

Range around town 85-90 miles,
Zero to sixty, about the next light. It was as fast as any 4 banger gasser of the day.
Top speed, no tranny remember ?
62 mph.

Cost of everything but the truck he already had. Around six thousand.
The truck had blown its gas engine anyway.

Everything worked flawlessly with fork lift reliability. :XD

The box of commutator brushes, each would last about 3 months, a set cost about $15

The truck rode good with all the batteries and after he beefed up everything he could haul 800 pounds of cargo.

Pretty cool I thought.
My point, these new fancy EV’s should be doing far better on the range end of it.

A used forklift brushed motor and super heavy wet batteries netted 85-90 miles,

Our current EV fleet across all makers should be with lithium tech batteries well past 350 miles, in the winter, hauling loads and pulling trailers.

U can’t touch dis !

Anyone out there with some insight into the chances Ford will come out with either a fully electric Maverick or a plug in Hybrid in the foreseeable future?? I’m llooking forward to the day I don’t have to stop at the gas pump any longer.
I wouldn't buy one. I like my hybrid because I don't have to depend on an infrastructure that might not get built and might not support large numbers.

Dad, ya gotta get with the times: a) the infrastructure IS in place, ya just gotta look it up on your apps, & b) the range on EVs has increased dramatically esp for smaller vehicles like Mav sized.

Lots of valid points made in this thread.
You can bet your Bippy Ford is aware of these concerns.

Ha, what a joke. Maybe it is in place in some major cities, probably a few states, but the majority of the rest of the US the infrastructure is in need of updating. And the lack of adequate charging stations is horrendous across the US. The battery tech has gotten slightly better but still has major advancements needed. The average person in the US is not going to sit there and wait on a battery to get charged as it is now. This is why the whole ev push blew up in their faces like a nuclear bomb in the US, a complete updated infrastructure is not in place. They put the cart before the horse, i.e.(to do things in the wrong order, reversing the natural or logical sequence of tasks. It describes acting prematurely or prioritizing the final result before completing the necessary preliminary steps. It implies inefficiency or jumping to conclusions, like planning a party before securing a venue).

Road tripping in a EV is doable but it does take a lot of planning ahead. Hopefully the infrastructure has gotten better than it was when we had our MachE! It was quite an experience starting with Ford letting us put 1500 miles on their demo MachE!!

I agree with you.

What if, you don't want to stay on a leash/ pre assigned route? Like 🐑
How much of your battery capacity out of 150 mile range Maverick, are you willing to use before you want to plug-in?
Are you comfortable running it down to "25 miles" in winter/hills.
Or
You have a full charge. You've driven 25 miles out of town and you come upon these signs.....

Is our ability to explore the country now limited to charging stations i.e. the electric leash. A good way to keep the population where you want them. Is to limit their ability to wander.
With this smiple $20 ICE Range extender and 5 gallons of gas. You can extend the range of a EcoBoost or hybrid more than 100 miles. How do you do that with an EV?
20250831_083652.webp

Yeah I'm old, but I still see ICE as giving a person the freedom and abilty to travel where you want. It is pretty much unlimited with gas. Very limiting with EV.

With that ICE range extender I can go 250+ miles around town in the Mav hybrid, or 200+ on the highway. And I have ten of those range extenders in the garage since I am in a great gas program here in our state, and I need it for the lawn tractor and certain power tools, not just for our two vehicles. Not willing to pay up for the inconvenience of an EV when my current ICE costs are so reasonable.

I posted this before. Here's a Utah range extended Ford Escape. 😁
Everybody tends to lose their mind about this picture.
No knows what the guy has in those cans. They could be empty they could have gas they could have **water who knows. It illustrates the benefit of a gas engine and the ability to actually carry range with you. I understand my position and what I'm saying doesn't apply to most EV owners.
If you want to EV forget about freedom and exploration away from big cities or highways.
You better stay within leash distance of a plug, if you own an EV.

**Yes I know water isn't supposed to be carried in a red can blah blah blah

Maybe trust buyers to know their driving habits in advance of making a purchase.
