Man, manufacturer's got this wrong ONCE, 40 years ago, and the wives' tale still lives on to this day...

For accuracy, yes, the fuel pump IS cooled by fuel. And yes, some early pumps DID die if you ran the tank too low. But for at least the last 30 years, (personal knowledge from replacing fuel pump on 1999 Chevy Blazer, those liked to break the plastic vanes inside the pump consistently near 100k no matter what you did), manufacturer's have designed the pump to sit inside a well, with the intake sticking out below this well, and the fuel from the return line filling this well to spill over back into the tank.

Meaning this well will never be dry, even if the tank runs dry. That well is what cools your fuel pump.

The complex evap system in our trucks work best between 1/4 full and 3/4 full.

Below 1/4 risks sloshing that can cause evap system aborts and misreads.

Over 3/4 increases the risk of saturated charcoal canisters that will throw a costly to repair code.

Those that run their tanks to near empty or fill “beyond the first click” or just asking to have evap systems issues.

C’mon folks - let’s all keep our breathing air cleaner. Our cats & dogs & other animals will appreciate it too!

The scanner PID for fuel tank quantity states the testing is ONLY done within the range of 30-85%. Unless the Maverick is considered a car. (who said that!)

There will be no aborts or misreads - as it's not even going to attempt it.

Someone mentioned tank temp before, now, not 72 outside, but returning fuel added to tank - this isn't that high for 2-5% fuel remaining. All the PID's at the end.

The fuel pump is best cooled when gas is flowing through it. Yes, the gas flowing through the pump is the main way it stays cool. When it starts to suck air - the ICE will stall and stop.

The grungy gas trapped in that well now has to cool an overheating air sucking pump. Probably a bad idea to try to start on an empty tank out of frustration & denial.

That would put the truck figuring the 13.8 gallon figure. (roughly)

That is what the math is based on, for amount of fuel left.

For the mpg to use with it - that's a rolling average of some chunk of miles. Haven't track figures well enough to figure it out.

And I've had plenty of times where it's obvious some past poor mpg was used for that DTE and I went way past the 50 miles before it hit the 25 miles DTE.
In other words, my miles between those 2 warnings - one logged time was almost 40 miles.
And the 25 remaining stretched about the same.
So the 0 to empty did not actually have the fuel gauge at the bottom of the red tick mark yet.
24MY, so actual gauge, not light levels.

I have in a note the following from early on:
25 DTE - light on, outside edge of red line.
10 DTE - middle of red line about.
1 DTE - filled up 14.3 (think I've seen inside edge red line on 0 DTE)
Light on estimated 1 gal from 13.8 gal, but at least 1.5 gal past that available.

Good topic here as I too was curious as to "true" capacity of the tank on Hybrid models. Just recorded my second fill-up since acquiring the Maverick. Took it down to "29 & 32" miles to empty. Got 561 miles on the first tank & 530 on the second tank. Very happy with the fuel economy of these Hybrids! Don't have the app or OBD2 stuff to where you see %, just relying on what's on the dash from the factory.

You do know that it has moving parts in it with bearings, right? Those are not lubricated by magic pixie stuff.

So it could work on a frame rail. Its definitely not lubricated with the gas in the tank sloshing around..

Lay down the pixie dust, and back away slowly...

Negative, the fuel pump assembly includes a small well (about the size of a soda can, typically) that encompasses the fuel pump motor in the fuel pump assembly, and gets removed from the tank with the assembly. Picture is of the S-series pump I am familiar with.

I usually try to fill up once I get to 1/2 a tank. If I'm on a road trip I might let it get to 1/4 depending on how the stops work out.

The MTE is calculated based (reported by members) using the prior 40-50 mpg usage and the remaining fuel of 13.8 gallons of actual gas between displayed (1.2 +/- gal) "empty" to displayed (15.0 gal +/-) "full".

I fill up at 100-120 MTE so that gas in tank doesn't get as old!!! (I have NOT REPLACED my wife of 56 years (yet)! I figure I have over $52K in nail jobs walking around there).
