I have ordered a 2023, so haven't seen the manual. I expect there are lots of discussions on this. Any 2022 owners experiencing success with 87, running premium or splitting the difference with 89?

been several post on this in the past, search the forum using the word octane and you can review previous. For me, I will be using 93 in my EB but everyone has their own opinion.

I run 87, but if I'm towing for a trip I'll do 93. Maybe once every few tanks as well.

There are 250K different opinions out there on this 😉 My experience from only about 47 years of driving 20+ different vehicles from is that unless the manual specifically requires an octane rating of more than 87, that is what I use. Never had any issues with any vehicle using 87 octane. In fact, I will not buy a vehicle that “requires” more than 87 octane. My coupe says if I use 93 octane I will achieve two more horsepower. No thanks 😎 Use whatever floats your boat 😉

Just don't use diesel and I think you'll be fine. We aren't talking about supercars here.

Page 172 of the manual. This has been covered very often here.

Some believe turbos should have high octane, which is what I'll probably do.

So, in summary, use whatever. Though you may find 91 is better when towing.

Great. I appreciate all responses but a peek at what Ford says was a great help. I will likely start with 87 and occasionally move up, just to compare. Of course it will likely be May before this happens.

So I use 92 in my 2.0. I do not notice any MPG increase. maybe 1 MPG if anything. What I have noticed is more responsiveness, especially when starting out or if I need to get on it. With 87 there seemed to be a small lag from giving it gas to response in the truck. 92 seems to resolve that lag. Noting earth shattering, but noticible.

I have read that it takes longer for the engine to advance the timing when you go to 92 from 87 then retarding it from 92 to 87. i.e. 2 tanks to advance the timing for 92, and only 10 miles to retard it for 87. I have also been told that the timing moves quickly in either direction. For some reason everyone wants me to use my "show truck" as a work truck so I tend to haul or tow things often. So I use 92 since that is recommended for towing/hauling. The added responsiveness is a added bonus.

A mechanic friend of mine told me that it doesn't matter what I use. It is more important to stick with whatever I choose. He said that it can cause problems switching from 87 to 92 and back to 87 all the time. I don't know how valid that advice it, just that it was given to me.

FWIW my opinion is for the extra 50-70 cents a gallon why not use what is better even if it is a splurge. I can afford it and I drive like I am 105 most days. I am getting close to 29 MPG. If you are running that tight of a budget maybe a brand new vehicle isn't the best choice. However, 'Merica and we all do what we need to do to get by.

FWIW, my Escape user manual has almost the exact same language for its Ecoboost. Again, unless you are dealing with supercars, consumer vehicles are going to be designed to handle 87.

It can do 85 to 92. I've done 85 87 92 ans 94. More power and runs smoother at 92. 94 no difference 87 runs smoother if you go 1 grade up lowest runs a little rough. Mileage no real difference. I get 21 to 22 mpg on short hilly trips highway mid speed one o get 32mpg just at 80 kph

Based on my 18 Fusion 2.0 I run 87 and get about 1 mpg better mileage vs 93. The 93 does bump the power up 10-15 hp but the added cost plus less mpg I use 87 on a daily bases.

For the huge difference in price I wouldn't use 93 octane over 87. Maybe if I'm towing but I'm not giving it full throttle and don't need the small amount of responsiveness for the significant cost increase. just my 2¢, YMMV.

I thought about this some more. I use 89 in my older vehicles simply because of their age. Given I work from home and will be going through a tank of gas every month or two, I may keep 93 in it.

2L seems to be a bit clunky to me on 87 @ Elevation - Probably stick with 88 or above -
