To be fair, this new platform is all about smaller, and more affordable EVs. That's a use case where EVs are stellar, as compared to something like a lightning that's asked to tow a massive trailer. Not to mention we've seen demand for affordable EVs is pretty darn significant on a global scale.Because the recent Lightning was so successful.

The Lightning walked so the Ranchero could run.Ah yes, the Ford lightning EV wave of the future.

But suburban moms dont want truck beds. Neither do Escape buyers....or they would have bought the Mav instead. One thing to keep in mind is that Ford isn't trying to sell this to anyone on this forum. They're gonna keep selling the Maverick, and the spy guys at AutoForecast say a Maverick redo is just three years away.
Ford even said recently, and I paraphrase poorly, "it's not really meant to be a truck". They make a big deal that it has more interior space than a RAV4. And that makes me think "suburban mom". I pulled that out of thin air, but there it is. I suspect Ford might be chasing the crowd that bought the discontinued Escape with this vehicle.
The above is absolutely correct..

The Lightning being based off the ICE model made more sense than the unibody GM EV trucks. At least the Lightning kept the full real truck functionality and all the aftermarket accessories still fit.Ah yes, the Ford lightning EV wave of the future.

Hopefully, that recessed cab wall discussed above will make up for any smaller lengths or maybe even allow a bed size increase. Our 2025 Maverick XLT hybrid replaced two vehicles: 1) A 2003 medium-sized SUV with huge (tall & flat) cargo area and 2) a 2008 NA 4 cylinder sedan with Port Injection. The Maverick can accomodate (4) 32 gallon barrels and a bag or two full of lawn/tree debris like our old SUV and gets better mileage than the sedan. The Santa Cruz (in a test) and most other vehicles we checked out (including Passports, Pilots and Grand Highlanders) that fit in our garage could only accept 2 barrels. The Ridgeline had poor mileage, was too long for the garage, and was more expensive.
Hope that the the 2027 small/medium EV pickup has the bed space of the Maverick and not the bed space of the Santa Cruz. The photos give the impression that the new EV pickup bed is on the smaller size like the Santa Cruz. Please say it isn't so!
