Glad to hear a professional get tripped up by that dang tiny triangle trim piece. I have been designing my own diy Maverick truck bed cap.
My solution was to box it out forming a tiny but usable shelf. Transfer the weight to either side of the trim piece and across its front to provide stability. The top shelf binds the whole corner together. After solving that, I realized the shelf was too short to serve as a tiny bedside table. So I raised the height and added usb port in the spare space.
Second, definitely raised style. Mavericks bed depth is much less than it looks or ‘acts’ Even the raised hight would be too low for me. As a reference if setting on the wheel well can an slightly above avg. man not hit his head by at least two inches?
Third related to the last, even the raised versions I have seen block the center taillight by some measure.
The back trim looks to be the primary problem blocking the light.
Forth, drainage those dang triangular trim pieces keep the water trapped along the horizontal rail. My solution and to fix the taillight is to extend the slopped section to overlap the whole taillight assembly by a good distance.
Because the unibody doesn’t flex much especially there. I would only gap it enough to not touch but be close enough that rain would be stopped by its cross section and surface hugging tension.
