The fobs can be dumbed down, (see mykey in manual ).and restricted. I have not done that but for kids etc. can restrict max speed, limit radio volume, etc. The push button start lariat comes with a key that can be removed from the fob to unlock door.
I'll keep a lookout for that section. I don't have a truck or a manual yet, but I have been slogging through the PDF one online. I'm only to about page 175 though.

Dang my 2022 came with a backup key/fob for free
They are supposed to.

So with 2 - you can take a cut key with transponder and program truck to accept it for free.

With only 1 you cannot.

Sometimes nice to have 3.

One key I got isn't available now. But it's my 3rd.
Strattec Transponder Ignition Key 128-Bit Chip 5923293 for Ford 164-R8128

But the other is. Need some pliers to turn it without a fob, but as hidden backup works fine. No programming on this required obviously.

Always nicer to have 3, since it means if you keep that third in the house 24/7/365, and the other two aren't somehow lost at the same time, you can buy another blank and program it yourself (since you still have 2 functional keys). In my opinion, having 3 keys is crucial if you want to avoid costly dealership replacements in the future.

I am the only one who will be driving my truck, but you better believe I will have 3 keys functional at any one time. I'll only ever use one of them, but the other two will ensure I can always replace lost keys with a simple Amazon or Ebay order.

FYI - I thought I was being smart by ordering a "blank" Maverick key on Amazon. Took it to an Ace Hardware store that cuts keys but they refused to cut keys that you did not buy from them. Maybe just my area but 3 other locksmith shops I've been to can not cut the Maverick key since it is longer than their key cutting machine...and requires a special key cutting machine...still looking for someone to cut the key. For those not familiar with the Manual...you have to have the two ORIGINAL keys issued at purchase in order to program a new key...it is smart to have that 3rd backup key. My dealer wanted $120 for a third key.

Here you go. I mailed him two blanks and one of my keys and he sent them back cut. Both work in my doors, but only one programmed correctly to start the truck. Which is not his fault, it is the fault of the key chip being bad.

An OEM extra key for a Smart car runs $450 at a Mercedes-Benz dealer.

When I wanted a replacement key for my smart car, because I only have one. Which is very similar style of key as the Maverick.
I ordered one online. Because I did not buy it from the locksmith, none of the locksmiths in Las Vegas would cut or program the key and guarantee that it would work.
The locksmiths wanted payment up front and if the key didn't work, I was out the money and still didn't have a working key.

Do you think if it wasnt programed could it be used as a spare, unlock the door only key? I would like one to do hide a key but not able to start truck for lock outs by mistake only. Thanks
Just get a locksmith to cut you a metal (fobless) key. My locksmith cut one as a test key before she attempted to cut the eBay fob I had bought. She just gave me the test key. They are not expensive.

Many locksmiths can cut the key for you. The mobile locksmith in my tiny town cut 2 fob keys for me for $75, and gave me the metal key she cut for testing, no charge.

Programming the fob yourself is easy.
MAX programmed fob keys = 4.

For several years the Porsche key stores driver's preferred seat, mirror, etc settings for multiple drivers and when you insert each key the seats and mirrors adjust accordingly to that driver's key. All kinds of preferred driver settings and be stored in the key. The Porsche keys are a ridiculous $800+, each.

Now see that's nice - my extra transponder key had the 2 flat parts twisted 90 degrees, and I didn't look hard enough on Amazon for non-transponder key that kept it flat the whole length.

No hardware store had non-fob correct key, and none were going to cut what I brought.
3 locksmiths same thing.
Once I researched what models & years it was used in - I found it tad hard to believe. I think the locksmiths wanted to charge for programming at almost dealer prices.
Lucked out on auto-repair shop's mobile unit being willing to. $30 for 3 cuts, and with 2 being the fob metal only that caused him problems - lucked out.

Can anyone post a link to this? My searches are bringing up everything but this one.
Since a lot of comments on different things - what is "this" you'd like a link for?

Just the extra key & fob?

I am fully aware. The point is that I sent two different key blanks to him, both containing a chip. When returned cut, one was programmable by me, the other failed to program. I have both originals and simply was trying to add a 3rd and 4th key. Which is why I say it is not his fault that one failed, since his physical key cut worked flawlessly. All 4 keys physically unlock the doors when inserted into the cylinder. The problem is 1 of the 4 wont crank the starter. Since it failed programming. But that isn't the locksmith's fault.

Edit to Add: It is actually fine with me that there is a key that won't start the ignition. I have it hidden under my truck in case I am locked out. If a thief finds it, they will be hella confused when they get into the truck successfully but can't start it. They then are free to steal my loose change and cell phone charging cables. But they won't be able to steal my truck.

This is starting to get too complicated. So a store that cuts keys can make me a few extras of these?
