I always set the pump at full blast. Did not realize I could slow it down. Will probably start - thanks.

Also have vague memories from the 70’s of using pumps without automatic shut off. Memories of gas on the side of car & on my self I began driving just as “self service” was being implemented …

Ahhh! I remember those days. It took my hometown 2-3 years to change the ordinance to allow people who were not employed, experienced, trained in the art of filling fuel tanks to do it. It was about the time the Fina service stations were having their "Pink Air in 64?/66?" (Because they had done everything thing but that?).

Yep - the days of telling the attendant to “fill ‘er up with regular” are long gone!

I went out of state for college from a “non self serve” state. My first gas station visit was confusing. Sat in car, then got out looking like a John Travolta confused meme. Although that was before memes & John Travolta

How many miles did you have on your truck when it happened? Also, what was the mpg when it happened? Just trying to figure out what would be considered a noticable drop.

It happened at 36,000 km, or roughly 25,000 miles. I normally expect about 5.4L/100km or 48mpg on highway trips and about 4.0L/100km or 65mpg in city and country road travel. I took it in right away when it happened, so I do not have any idea how much the mileage dropped. Now that the valve has been replaced, I'm back to my expected mileage.

“Overfilling” has a few definitions here on the forum. Most agree it means stop at first click. Some hybrid owners swear they can go beyond that first click safely. Some old timers don’t consider it overfilled until gas starts running down the side of your truck

It's hard, darn near impossible to overfill a (hybrid) Maverick gas tank. Lord knows I've tried going for the 900 mile club. The build just won't let you on these trucks.

As for the pump:
Google says:

Darn near impossible to overfill as long as you stop a first click.

Always a very small chance the gas pump is defective and could overfill I suppose.

Let me be more specific.
I always try a second time after a click off. In states with "vapor recovery nozzles" premature stops are frequent.

However, when it's not premature, additional tries rarely will put in more than 0.2 gal no matter the number of tries.
I've even shaken and bounced the truck a few times. No more air will burp out. No more gas will go in. So now, one try after the first click and done. I have to prove (to myself) the first click wasn't premature. About half the time it is and 2-3 gallons go in. That's not "topping off".

First click may be reliable to trust in states / zones with different more old fashioned pump nozzles.

Once again, one size (method) does not fit all.

Shaking & burping your truck - I love that

You ARE overfilling according to the one size owners manual that DOES fit all. You can justify your actions in your quest for a 900 mile tank - but you are overfilling by definition.

Of course the owners manual is incorrect in many ways. Healthier for the Maverick to have oil changed well before 10,000 miles for example. And it really is better to stop BEFORE first click if you want to preserve your EVAP system.

Bumping and burping a Rav4 could/would add 200 miles of range.
worth it to many folks.

Bad design. Lawsuits. And free redesigned tanks came about.
