Remote started my 2.5 Maverick yesterday and a couple of minutes later when I got out I heardthe engine rattling on idle.

when I got in, engine light was flashing. I’ve put it in drive and engine stopped rattling and worked normally.

Got a message in Fordpass stating that a misfire had been detected.

took an appointment this morning but they don’t have any place open until the 30th.

Dealer told me that it happened to another client but it didn’t registered an EML. They discovered liquid in the entake, cleaned it up and the rattling stopped.

well, after going through all TSB and recalls on my Maverick, starting to get annoyed. I knew what I was getting into with first model year but still, ugh.

anyone had this?

Liquid in the intake? IF that is true, I would be asking why.

Thx I’ll follow (y)
Yeah I think this is going to be an issue Ford is going to have to address. From everything I've read it's the transmission - it does it during cold weather and it's pretty much the same symptoms as the escape has with the same transmission

Had a similar thing happen with our 2012 Prius a couple of times over the years, both on cold startup during damp conditions. Both times cleared up after a block. 🤞

Sounds like a transitory ICE misfire is causing a rattling in the damper.

Quote from a decent post on the Prius forum re misfire rattle on startup:

The actual rattle is the engine running erratically enough that the electric motors can not synchronize with the engine. A spring loaded damper that looks and functions much like a manual transmission clutch slips and rattles severely.

Don't agree with the "synchronize" bit, but an accurate description otherwise.

Hopefully all clears up when the misfire is sorted.

Cheers.

Per John Kelly video the hybrid in the trans has a "Resolver" inside and is used to synchronize the electric motors which are three phase. When dc current is generated due to permanent magnets on armature the dc current has current fluctuations and there are smoothing capacitors in convertor to stabilize the dc current. Perhaps a misfire causes enough rpm variations in the ice for the proper timing determination and the chatter happens?

Agreed. During a misfire condition the power pulses from the ICE would be too erratic and occur too quickly for the transmission to compensate for, and a chatter set up in the damper springs. I was too quick to dismiss the term "synchronize". 😬

My post was already linked above. My hybrid has the exact same issue as yours. Ford is going to have their hands full with this. I agree it’s been very annoying. I’ve wasted too much time trying to have this diagnosed. My dealer is now looking into a fix for the escape hybrid for a similar issue they had. They are talking with ford engineering to see how a similar fix can be applied to the hybrid maverick.

There's a TSB to fix the flashing check engine light and misfiring / rattling in some cases, but it looks like Ford needs to do a redesign of the transmission plate or clutch as it's also an issue for the Escape Hybrid.

Looks to be only isolated in colder climates.

Went ecoboost here and have had zero issues, just a recall to reflash the brake controller for trailers 13months in on mine

What’s the TSB number? I haven’t heard of one issued for the maverick addressing that.
