I’m new here so I apologize if something like this has already been created, but here I am.
I’ve been back and forth on choosing which engine to go with and want to hear some opinions and perspectives.
Me personally, I prefer hybrid due to the mileage which was my main concern when wanting to get a truck.
Right now, I drive a Kia Forte averaging 36 MPG. My dilemma is that my daily commute is about 80 miles with about 85% on highway going 70-80MPH. So would I be ok with sticking with EcoBoost should some come in by next week at a local dealership like I was told or should I go ahead and place an order and wait like everyone else for a hybrid?
I don’t have any need for towing or all wheel drive as I live in flat-Florida, but I wouldn’t be doing too much city driving. At the same time, if I plan on keeping this for 7+ years, will I look back and wish I’d opted for more mileage since it would be my everyday car?
Any input is appreciated!

Reading this I recommend the Hybrid. Hybrids are lower maintenance vehicles (at least for the first 10 years) and you would have warranty for the hybrid components (including the transmission) for 8 years/100k miles. If you want a sportier truck get the EcoBoost.

I don't know if my $0.02 is worth much as I currently have 2012 Honda CR-V aka "shark" (eats tires) and 2018 frontier sv and have never driven hybrid. But my thoughts:. Your commute 80 miles round trip =20kmiles/yr 80each way =40k m/yr. Think for best miles/$ = all electric probably but where will it come from when demand far exceeds availability and at what cost. If you work night shift charge car with solar during day or buy Powerwall to save for recharge. But to your question. I would think (since you want a pickup) I would prefer the XL eco boost (to minimize weight) add aftermarket cruise. Have engine tuned for 75mph and follow recommendation as to tires etc they say would help. I have no idea how long it will last but it appears gasoline will be higher than it is now. I feel for you as I worked a job one time that was 48 miles each way and found it cheaper to rent motel by month (get great rate save $20/week trash and towels daily sheets changed every 3rd day plus no room tax since 30days is considered apartment so nightly room tax not applicable). Hybrid maverick will be running on ice almost if not always at 70-80mph and according to manual is tuned for 91 octane. Probably only necessary at high temperature what ever that may workout to be in Florida. I feel that as soon as Ford gets enough battery we can buy plugin which will allow better mpg. Probably be at least 2 years I think. Good luck!

If your driving is 80% highway you won’t get the 40mpg that hybrid advertises.. but you will get the 30mpg that the ecoboost is rated at.. Plus the extra power for highway driving.

It’s up to you though, I’m biased because I ordered an ecoboost and I’d assume the same bias applies for a lot of the hybrid votes.

Where does it say 91 specifically for the hybrid. The manual is vague and does not designate which engine they are referring to with the 91 octane.

The hybrid is still rated better highway than the ecoboost (33 vs 30). So even if you're not getting the full benefit of the hybrid, you will still be getting better mileage overall. Plus as others have said, it is less maintenance and if you're not towing, there really is no benefit to the ecoboost besides not having to wait as long to get your truck.

From what I understand, the Ecoboost is likely to be quite a bit more fun to drive, too. That's why I ordered it over the hybrid.

Well your only option at this point for MY22 will be an EB.

MY23 for a Hybrid if you haven't ordered it so it sounds like you are going to get an EB.

Wish there was hybrids actually out there to get real world feedback on the driving. But I think the ecoboost was about a second or slightly more so faster than the hybrid in 0-60. I don't remember if anyone compared their highway/passing ability. Also depending on your trim and rear suspension, the handling/ride is a little harsher with the 4k tow package or FX4 package due to the different suspension. Depends on what you want out of your driving experience.

Well there is a video on YouTube that I posted but the mods took it down saying it was already posted. Guy went to SEMA with a hybrid Ford lent him. Trip was 800 miles most of the drive was 75MPH. After 250-300 miles he average 36 MPG I think it might have even been 38. I can't remember was a few days ago when I have time I will track it down.

Yaaaa that’s what it’s looking like at this point. While I’d like to wait for hybrid, I think I rather go with EB for the small mileage difference. I was told a dealership was receiving some next week. Just waiting to hear back from them to see what I need to do to make sure I can reserve one, if possible.
Trading in my car for the purchase so I’d think I’m better off value-wise to take whatever vehicle I can instead of waiting over a year.. yikes!

It is a significant difference in fuel mileage.

I know you said it will be mostly highway but lets say it is 80/20 highway.

We'll call it 30mpg on the hwy and 23 in city because you said FWD for the EB - you'll net around 28.5 mpg in best case scenario.

Hybrid is 33mpg on the hwy and 42 in the city - you'll net around 34.8 - more than 20% more efficient than the EB just on gas miles alone.

Plus you'll pay $1,085 for the EB. You could potentially run more expensive fuel for top performance (or to realize full mpg potential) and your maintenance costs will be higher on the EB.
