There are variations between XLT and Lariat Door mount Mirrors and their prices vary widely. Has anyone purchased a mirror to understand the level of disassembly of the mirror and its constituent parts allow? I have a Lariat and a crack in the very basic element but must buy an integrated assembly part for over $1000 to replace a cracked plastic element I see common on non-Lariat model mirrors. I am wondering if I can remove my mirror and buy the XLT Mirror at the lesser price and disassemble and re-assemble, replacing only the cracked plastic element and be good to go - after a dealer recalibration.

Plastic parts can be repaired if mirror works and just the plastic 20/30 bucks in material and some spray paint is much better than 1000 dollars. Even if a body shop charges 2/300 bucks still saving a lot. They fix plastic all the time

I do have a 2024 Lariat and it set me back about $650. Yes there are cosmetic differences from XL, XLT then Lariat. My order included in the part number PTM which is paint to match, this refers to the shell on the topside of the mirror it came in, in gloss black so no painting was required . The mirror is only available as 2 parts the base, mechanism , mirror as one part the other part is the cover that was PTM . It looks like in you case you will be able to reuse the cover. Good day! You may be able to do all of that swapping of good/new parts from a new one with one for an XL/XLT but I am not sure as these things go the Lariat in general is usually different some how. That is the price we pay for the really pretty one!

Takeing the whole unit on and off was a piece of cake! Remove the panel on the inside with plastic pry tool and there there were 3 bolts, 7mm i believe and the connector. The whole process took 10 minutes. If the dealer did it it was another $90 to my injury.

Hope this answers your questions!

THanks - this was my suspicion that there is a way to pull this off and the OEM is just maximizing revenue and profits for a grab bag of plastic parts.

The parts manager started to make it sound like I should be grateful that I did not drive an F250 with the extended mirrors, he was talking in the 2k range for those. I did not feel any better!

Looks like the OP has the 360 camera mirror. That may throw a wrench in the used mirror replacement parts idea.
I would definitely try the clamp and glue method until there are some 360 mirrors available used.

He is right. My F250 folding and extended mirrors decided to quit …it’s gearing strip. Checking first replacements revealed high cost. A shop was machining replacement gears and motors at reasonable prices. But the ”how to” to replace them lacking. No guarantee a DIY may accomplish repairs, instructions lacking. So I left them out all times.

You would need a mirror with the camera, BLIS and heating element Or you would have to attempt surgery. Sound so could be a total loss if you screw it up. Have insurance replace it and pay the deductible? My insurance has a reduced deductible under certain circumstances. Like if I hit wildlife. Good luck!

I once fought with my insurance company after hitting a raccoon. It bent the oil filter and my oil leaked out. It just so happened that my digital dash was out so I couldn't tell that I had no oil pressure until it lost power. 🙃 They threatened to cancel me if I pursued it so I bought a used engine and installed it myself for less than $600. I canceled that insurance and saved money so happy ending.

Powerstroke Tech Talk shows how F-series mirrors are repaired.
