Does cruise control at least try to maintain speed on a downhill slope?

So I just read another topic by an individual concerned about not being able to downshift on a downhill road and it got me wondering, does the Maverick cruise control try to keep you from going faster than your set speed?

My wife's minivan has no way to downshift, but if you set cruise it will use the transmission to try and maintain the set speed.

Specific example is right by our house. There is a state route that is 50 mph and has a very steep down hill portion. If cruise is set and you go down that hill the van will actually down shift. Jumps from the cruising RPMs of 1500ish to almost 5000. In fact I've had times where it caused me to slow to under 50.

And that's without any kind of tow/haul mode or any other input from myself.

Hybrid or Ecoboost, regular cruise or adaptive. I'm just curious if the Maverick does the same.

Same - same, maintains just fine.

Electronic control on the trans and of braking has made modern car cruise even smoother.

It will coast until you get back to the set speed then it will go back to maintaining that. The CC may behave differently depending the drive mode you use also. In that case I usually have it in eco mode but I am pretty sure it does the same in regular drive mode.

This trucks’s cruise has maintained my speed up or down hill better than any I’ve had before.

Hybrid ACC here, it will maintain your set speed exactly when going downhill, usually by doing some regenerative braking.

The hybrid does have the capability to use engine braking but it usually will only happen on reeeally long declines when the battery has already been charged up all it can. Or if you put it in L tow mode it might do it more often.

Put it in Eco mode, you'll get more regenerative braking.

With the 2.0 liter eco boost and 8 speed transmission yes it will downshift to maintain the cruise control set speed or Within a reasonable amount of speed. My 2022 Maverick has done it on a moderate mountain passes.

I don't have ACC and have the same results.
(24 XLT hybrid) It's a little disconcerting when it starts to engine brake using the ICE suddenly (it's loud and it really revs) but it works well.
IME, on non-hybrids it depends a lot on the transmission tuning. The Honda Odyssey I had had a lit more engine braking in general - it would slow almost like a stick would when you got off the gas - but the Chrysler minivan I had previously would just coast along.

My 23 AWD XLT will go from 55 to 70, and maybe beyond on a medium hill. I find it disappointing. I just started another the thread on it.

On the hybrid with a trailer that has brakes, I like Eco mode for slowing.

If you tap the brakes really lightly, as in to get normal regen; it activates the trailer brake. Sometimes you don't want that.

Eco mode will slow you quite a bit, without activating trailer brakes or engine braking.

Both "L" and "Tow/haul" tend to spin up the ICE for engine brake whether it's needed or not.

The modes are a tool. Each situation is unique. There is no single mode that does everything well.

There are only a few cases I find ECO helpful. But this is one. Also on my daily commute I have exactly one long downhill section where ECO holds my speed constant just coasting. But to be useful I need to have a mostly empty battery at the start of the downhill.
