I don't know if this is a new development or not, but I can find no reference to it in a search of the forum. I've been waiting for backordered axels for my hybrid Maverick for over three weeks now. I stopped driving it two days after the axels were ordered as the shaking was getting bad and I don't want to risk any more damage. Upon checking on the status of the backordered axels today, I was told that the axels were in, but the axel clips (transmission side) were not yet in. I asked why they can't just use the clips from the old axels and they said that Ford would not let them use the old clips for this repair. My questions are , is that is this a new development ? Has anyone else had this said to them ? Has ford traced a problem back to the clips?

These must be OTU (one time use) parts. There are certain parts (nuts, bolts, clips, seals, gaskets, etc.) that Ford has indicated should not be reused. They cannot be reused in Ford-paid repairs. And if they are not replaced in a customer paid repair, that could cause future service part warranty problems.

There are a bunch of needed OTU parts (mostly nuts and bolts) for the front halfshaft replacement on the Maverick. There is a circlip needed for the LH halfshaft...but that comes with it. I looked up that part #, and it is indeed backordered. But it shouldn't need to be ordered separately.
They may be waiting for it in error (since it is on the "discard list")? Or maybe the new halfshaft was missing it, and that is why they needed to order it? Or maybe it is a different part than I am thinking of that they are waiting for?

If it is indeed the LH halfshaft retaining circlip they are waiting for....maybe prompt them to check and see if it came w/ the new halfshaft?

Lots of garages may re-use them, but not "best" practice.

yea, looking at the service manual. so many parts are noted as being one time use and to replace them.

I would have thought the axels came with the clips. Every axel I replaced as a mechanic did.

I keep hearing about an axle shortage but when ours needed repaired they had them the next day or day after. This was just this Summer.

Those new axles should have clips installed already, just a pressure clip that snaps in when it gets to the groove. I’ve done 4 so far and they all had them.

Damn, got my hopes up. This is like the last little hair in the soup lol. Hopefully Ford addresses whatever is causing these CV axle issues so we stop having to watch out for this issue, or that issue, and can just enjoy driving our trucks worry free.

Brian. Are you a Ford technician or have you had 4 CV axles replaced on your truck ?

Kevin, it turns out you were right all along. The clip is already installed on the halfshaft and has been sitting in the box that way the whole time, instead of being installed on my truck. I've gone a month without the use of my truck for nothing.

Dang, I was afraid of that! 🫤 But I hope your truck is fixed now!

So for context for everyone else reading this. Certain hardware is "one time use". Ford techs must replace them to comply with Ford warranty policy. There are "lists" of parts given for certain repairs (and at other times the tech must make their own list of OTU parts based on institutions in workshop manual). So the tech sees that that part number needs to be replaced, and includes it in the list of parts to order for the repair. The parts department ordered the parts, and that part was on backorder. No one noticed that that same part comes with the halfshafts and didn't really need to be ordered separately for this repair.

Someone should have noticed. But depending on how the parts ordering procedure works in a dealership, I could easily see how something like that could happen!
