While out washing the truck it looks like I need to make an appointment with the Dealer. The hood has corrosion on the right side where the hood dips down in the middle.

Check your vehicles boys and girls.

First of all thank you for taking the time and posting a picture.
Damn 😲 that's terrible. It may not be corrosion but it sure isn't good.
Looking at the picture in enlarging it I see texturing on the finish of the hood.

I don't know if you bought your Maverick brand new or whether it was used.
Do you know if there ever was, a vinyl decal on your hood?
I've attached a picture of 3M matte black automotive decal vinyl it has micro release adhesive backing.
If there was a vinyl decal on there and it wasn't taken off properly it could possibly pull the paint loose.
I've tried to replicate the exact position on my hood and took a picture of it if you enlarge it there's no texturing to it.

Almost looks like a microfiber towel pattern.

I bought it brand new.

It is under the vinyl which was installed by professionals and has been on over a year. There is no texture showing what you are seeing away from the area that had corroded is the wonderful fisheye of factory paint under the vinyl.

This is the texture I'm seeing.
That's why I had a hunch about vinyl.
That's not "fish eye" circled in red. That the pattern of micro release that is used vinyl.

Can not be seen with naked eye. That is the underside, sticky side of quality vinyl, so it doesn't allow air bubbling. Makes it easier to lay as well.

I know it's the underside of vinyl. That's why I attached the picture.
For seven years I was co-owner and worker of a vinyl graphics shop in Las Vegas. I also know when customers remove vinyl improperly paint bubbling can happen.
It wasn't removed. There was never vinyl on top of it. Like I said previously I bought the truck new, waited 11 months for it.

For seven years I was co-owner and worker of a vinyl graphics shop in Las Vegas. I still have rolls of vinyl and ppf.

My theory.
The hood is aluminum.
Very little chance of corrosion.
When the decal was removed, too much heat was applied, softening the paint.
If involved the Vinyl game I am sure you have heard of Masters of Branding.

For your theory to be true the vinyl would have had to been removed which it hasn't been.

I think you are going to have a difficult time getting that fixed under warranty. They are going to blame the vinyl. Who’s to say the installer didn’t have to remove (improperly) and re-do during the initial install? Good luck!

They can say what they wish. The credentials of the installer will make it hard to prove it was their fault. The installer have been in business doing vinyl and making a living doing it since before 1998. Dealerships, All sorts of businesses, all sorts of motorsports teams use him. Companies and Motorsports teams have flown him in to do install work. Even Ford has used him, not a dealer the Company.

Thanks for your 2 cents worth.

This post wasn't asking for others opinions or theories it was posted to get people to pay attention to their vehicles.

the patterning mentioned before maybe "air release type vinyl - the edge of the hood looks nasty regardless and will be following . to see where this goes ...

cheers

Good luck, rust/perforation warranty is the absolute most difficult thing to get approved. Ask me how I know. They are definitely going to blame the vinyl

Welcome to the world of aluminum Ford hoods. Ford has struggled with this problem for over a decade starting back with the F-150, I believe.

The issue starts at the factory and I believe it was determined that if the hoods are not properly prepped there can be iron "dust" that is primed and painted over. Aluminum and iron do not play nice with each other and this is the result. Causes paint to bubble and slowly spreads.

It's called galvanic corrosion. Look up the science of it if you want. The same thing happens with aluminum wheels and steel brake rotors. They can sometimes "fuse" together and be a major pain to separate if you try to remove the wheels. I've had to break out a sledgehammer and hit the inside of the tire to break the bond.

Anyway, Ford has had issues and extended warranty claims on many of their hoods. My 2015 Mustang has a few spots like this that showed up after the 6 year warranty Ford offered, go figure.

My body shop guy basically said you need to replace the hood and hope you got a properly prepped one but he said it almost always shows up again if you just try to clean it up and repaint. He says he has piles of Ford hoods with the same problem. I believe Ford started to negatively charge the hoods, think static electricity, to reject iron but it isn't perfect.

Contact Ford, they will most likely warranty it unless they determine something else caused it.

Ford aluminum hoods have have issues with corrosion since they started. It's been a problem during the stamping of the hoods with metal particles not being leaned off properly. Dissimilar metals corrode.
Many have been replaced during the warranty period.
