My Maverick came with the Continental ProContact TX tires (225/65-R17). According to the Continental tire website the ProContact TX includes Run Flat technology.

Does anyone know if Ford and Continental created a special version of this tire without Run Flat? Or did we in fact get Run Flat tires?

When I look at various tire sites (including Continental's site), the only indication of "run flat" is on one site, and even in that site, when you look at the detailed specs, it says "Rim Protection - NO". I personally would not count on them being "run flat" unless I got something from either Ford or Continental stating they meet that spec.

But then, I've had to replace multiple sets of rims because of road damage caused by "overnight" potholes sinkholes. The combination of big wheels and low profile tires just doesn't mix well with country roads. Last instance involved my wife's Impala with 245/40R20 tires. Following behind a large truck, so didn't see the ginormous hole that spanned the entire single lane. Result: Four bent rims, with one actually cracked so that it would not hold air. $1600 (on sale) replacement rims to the rescue. Since then, we've gone to taller profile tires on all our vehicles.

I have these on my new XL AWD, looked at the tread closely today, never really paid attention to them to be honest, but they sure do look pitiful to put on an AWD truck, kinda annoys me that you dont get more aggressive tires with the AWD option, same passenger car tires that are on the FWD.

Rim protection is usually a protruding lip that is supposed to protect a rim from something like curb damage but it rarely does. I don't think this is anything related to run flat technology.

I have a theory that Ford originally specd the Continental CrossContact ATR and then switched to the ProContact TX for production due to costs or vendor availability. Even the build and price feature used to show tires with a tread pattern that looked very close if not exactly the same as the CrossContact ATR and it's almost as light weight as the CrossContact TX.

I'm in Maryland with (generally) moderate winters and just purchased replacement tires for my Hybrid, Installation appointment delayed until Monday

My Maverick is 100% street driven, I have other AWD and 4x4 vehicles, and I wanted excellent street manors, a light tire for the hybrid, and a more capable tire for bad weather and winter. I don't care about the best off road capability, the best dedicated winter tire, or larger size on this truck. I went with the new (to the U.S market) Continental CrossContact ATR in the stock 225 size. They are light like the OEM tires at 25 lbs yet 1" wider tread due to the more square shoulder design. These have been used in Europe and Australia for years.

We'll see how they perform....

Now if I needed to drive my truck during the winter and lived in the upper ~20% of the U.S. I’d mount dedicated winter tires on dedicated wheels and swap back and forth with the seasons..

Just a tidbit, I’ve unfortunately had a couple nails in some tires (different times). Both the ProContacts on my Hybrid acted differently than previous tires I’ve had, even with low pressure, the side wall held up well. I’m used to traditional tires sagging and resting on the rim, but these don’t sag even with high deflation. Both times I kept thinking the tire sensor was off since it was in the teen PSIs but not resting on the rim. Hope this sheds some light

If Ford did spec a run-flat tire for the Maverick it would be a little odd. They're more expensive, heavier and Ford already includes a spare tire so why wouldn't they just go with a lighter, cheaper non run-flat tire? Strange
