Changing to AGM

FYI : I was at Costco today exchanging a battery out of my 2010 Ford Taurus and I asked them if they had an AGM battery for a 2022 Ford Maverick hybrid. His first question was, you need a battery already? I kept the story short and he looked it up and said yes and I wanna say he said about $160.00 but when I looked for at the Costco site it was for 124.99

The battery you posted is an H5. The “drop in” battery size for the Mav is H4. The H4 is about 8” in length, the one you posted is 9.5”. It may take some mods and you will definitely have to pull and reinstall the trim to get the H5 battery in. The H4 I got could be put in without removing the trim or needing any mods.

Crap, you're right! The Costco guy gave me the part number and I wrote it down on my battery receipt. I will post the part number tomorrow evening....stay tuned for more details

So truck went into battery saver and I charged battery to 12.7V did not drive truck and monitored for 5 days it maintained 12.5V...so no question the truck drains once it comes out of battery saver mode. Supposed to be a fix in early 2025 can't get here fast enough

I put in an LN1 AGM after optimizing it with
My Genius 5 then resetting BMS and letting it rest for 8+ hours. Never looked back. Consistently rests at 12.6v to 12.8v and charges at 14.6v to 14.8v as I drive. Two months in and no deep sleep issues. What came out of Mav was a 390 CCA POS …. It was only slightly better than the 350 CCA battery in my JD LX 280 garden tractor!!! I can’t believe Ford would install a “play” battery in good conscience. What did they think was going to happen ??????

How are you resetting BMS? This is way more than I wanted to know for a new truck!

I was ready to change to an AGM until I had two recalls completed on 8/28 - 24S27 and 24C01, both were completed by a mobile unit, before I put it in the garage I pulled fuse 11, as of this date - No Deep Sleep, no idea if the recall changed the problem or the fuse, or its all patiently waiting for cold weather. When it returns an AGM will be installed, enough already

Deep Sleep returned with the cold weather 11/4, the 24S27, 24C01 recalls and pulling fuse 11 did not solve the issue, heading for AGM replacement

If there is a parasitic drain an AGM battery isn't going to fix it.

There are known parasitic drains on all modern vehicles. They all communicate with the mothership so to speak. What switching to an AGM does is minimize the effects of those parasitic drains. Since the AGM charges faster, holds its charge better under the parasitic loads, and is designed to not stratify and require maintenance to undo that stratification, which eventually destroys the flooded battery, it is the best choice to minimize the effects of the parasitic draws that occur.

I don’t think any of us wanted to take the time or spend the money to replace our flooded batteries with AGMs on our hybrids, but by spending less than 200 bucks and giving up 30 minutes of our time, we have gained peace of mind and kept our Mavs in service.

Should Ford be doing this for us? Yes! Are they? No. Ford should have put an AGM in the hybrid Mav from the beginning because the AGM is used on virtually every other hybrid, even ones made by Ford because of the short driving periods that hybrids tend to have and the quicker charging and better handling of the parasitic drains.

I dream one day that Ford will wake up, smell the coffee, and offer all Mav owners a free AGM. Not holding my breath on it.

I was constantly getting Deep Sleep and Battery Saver messages on my 2024 Lariat Hybrid. 2-3 a week. Its 9 month old, 7k miles. Heading into winter and i don't want issues So I bit-the-bullet and bought a EverStart H5 AGM from Walmart. I've had it a few weeks now, no problems.

Till today. The truck sat in my garage for 5 days while I was out of town. No battery saver messages. I opened the door and no dome lights or illumnated start button or misc dash light.. Before doing anything, I got my volt meter and tested the new AGM battery. It's at 12.7V. Opened/closed the door multiple times. No dome light. I then started the truck, let it run (no gas engine) for about 10 seconds. Opened the door, dome lights work. Tried door multiple time, dome lights still works. Has anyone experienced this or have any idea, what's going on?

One last note. I still have the original battery, in case I need to put it back in when Ford fixes the on-going battery issues. I fully charged it. Just sitting on my bench, it continues to hold a charge of 12.6V. When it was in the truck and I was getting battery saver messages, it would constantly drop to 11.7V to 12.1V

I tried to buy the four year battery at walmart last week, and she told me that the AGM didn't come in the size I needed.

Uhh, it's AGM? Then definitely a bad idea for that car: a 1998 Cadillac Deville . . .

This is not true. You can search MTC and find an AGM battery for your Mav. Sometimes it might require a small modification to your Mav though...

Great - so now they have the wrong size tagged as being an option.
Not drop-in ready, will require mods to fit.
Wonder what database they got their info from.

H4 is the size, or group 140R - for drop in ready exact match.

uhm, the point was that I was buying for a '98 Deville, not a maverick, and was surprised that the battery warranty I'd been eyeing was AGM, which is utterly unsuitable for a vehicle that doesn't know how to charge/use them.

Normally when I hear parasitic drain it is used to mean higher than expected spec.
All the manufacturers have a max drain level they expect or below.

It's when you get higher than that you get fast problems.
I think that was the point - AGM won't help with those and will be worn out too. Perhaps they'll last just a tad longer but not by much since the drain really seems to be as bad as a light left on. At least those turn off automatically now... usually.

All these expected draws may be small, which a parasite is, but the term seems to have morphed into undesired draw - like a parasite.
And while we may not desire any of them - the vehicle is expecting some.
Actually - who doesn't desire remote unlock/lock at the least!

Great points on what should have been done. Got me curious if they spec AGM on their other hybrids - the ones without the stupid management system.
