Ceramic IR tinting and toll road transponders

Curious why ceramic tint would block this. Is there metal in it?

Visor= top 5" of windshield? If so don't block cameras view you may have to have dealer adjust it's sensitivity.

Why are you and others thinking that tint even ceramic tint is put on the outside.

Tint on the inside can never cover the camera.

All tint including ceramic tint should be installed on the inside as shown in the video by a professional installer.

Does ceramic TINT go on the inside or outside?!

The Easy-Pass in my neck of the wood does plate reading/charges with additional fees, but not without issues. If the transponder mounted behind the rear-view mirror, as instructed, the license plate could be stolen. My front license plate had been stolen and the thief had racked up more than hundred bucks of tolls in the NY Metropolitan area, prior to realizing that it's missing. Easy-Pass was no help, other than sending me pictures of small pickup crossing the bridges in question.

I had to file a police report of the stolen license plate, sent a copy to Easy-Pass to stop charging my account. In addition, I also had to get new license plates, on my dime too, Connecticut does not replace stolen ones. Since then, the transponder is removed from the windshield, it's in the glove-box in a static bag and check my license plates for existence rather frequently.

Make the long story short, license plate reading/charging created another petty crime that nobody cares to resolve, other the registered owner.

What a pain in the neck. For me, FL automatically charges via pay by plate if no toll acct is associated with plate.. for you having to constantly check for your plate sounds like the same hassle of me having to constantly check for a bumper mounted transponder if I go that way.. no fun

I believe in Florida as long as you have an account the transponder or license has an equal fee. If you do not have an account they read the plate send you the toll fee with an adminstrative charge.

I called the sun pass hotline today and a rep told me the same: that they would indeed charge the sunpass associated acct if one exist and is linked to the license plate (as long as there is sufficient funds) AND, it would be at the discounted sun pass rate. AND, per a random call to a rep, that there is no limit to the amt of times that the charge to the sunpass acct is activated by license plate (instead of read via transponder).

However, being in central FL, not all tolls are operated by sunpass, there is epass in Orlando, MDX for Miami Dade expressway, etc. So they all might have their own rules to handling inconsistent transponder transmission.. jeez I might just go with the sunpass sticker on the windshield and ask the detailer to cut out a block in the tint.. dunno how hard that'd be..

Is the Ceramic IR tint different than regular ceramic tint? I have ceramic all around my car including on the windshield and never have a problem with my toll transponder. I leave mine in the dashboard cubby behind the screen.

Soooo I was told that whatever blocks the ir in some tints also interferes with transponder communication.. sunpass's (for FL) own site has a list of vehies that apparently come stock with some kind of similar coating that they (sunpass) have identified as also blocking transponder communication.. many are luxury cars, Teslas etc. I never knew until now when considering it for the new mav

If you have a transponder sticker on your windshield just below the rearview mirror and want to add any kind of ceramic tint to your windshield, just have the tech cut out a notch around the transponder. If you are adding the transponder after the tint has already been applied, just cut out a notch for it. Doesn't seem to be much of a problem???

Magic IR blocking powers? Maybe they compress chaff into a flat layer like wood chunks in OSB. I'm really really joking about that.

I don't think anyone had any confusion about inside vs outside.

The Ceramic Pro installers have the panels cut by machine using vehicle-specific patterns that are provided by Ceramic pro. In the case of the maverick, it is split into a left and right side, with the center portion (sensors and camera etc.) left completely untinted. But that area is also completely blacked out from the factory, with the exception of a small triangle for the camera.

This is not the case with other vehicles and sensors, nor for many transponders. The tint goes up on the interior as a solid piece across (like an old school vehicle with just a standard mirror) and for vehicles with sensors and cameras (my mother in law's 2019 subaru forester with dual sensors that are 18"+ apart) the tint would be an obstruction. Also, my transponder is mounted via suction cup just below the sensors in the maverick, behind the mirror (out of my sight). But when I go under the tolls, the transponder can be under the tint, depending on the angle. So it may be necessary to move your transponder to a lower corner or other area.

I believe sunpass and epass are 100% compatible, even without the transponder. Epass and other toll systems in Florida can use the plate method without issue. Even the NC toll system is 100% compatible with sunpass transponders OR plates. It's just important to make sure your account is updated with your current plate(s). You can associate multiple plates too, or even rental car plates, all online, AND set an end date to them.

Per my forester example, inside* tint can most definitely cover cameras and sensors. Even on the maverick, if you had a diligent shadetree installer, they might remove the center cover and try to slide the tint up the inside of the glass... not sure if there is a gap there that it would fit in, but eyyy, sounds feasible. This is an age old dilemma for sealed 3rd brake lights on sedans and other vehicles.

You mention you are in Central Florida. I am also and use the turnpike, 408, 528 regularly and have never had a problem. I have the transponder you can move around, but as others have mentioned also, if it doesn't work it still picks up the plate. I haven't received any additional charges at all so you should be good.

Also, don't know where you are getting it done at but I went to Turbo Tint in Orlando and it was $200 for the ceramic windshield and they have 20% discounts if you reach out. Here's mine done. They have 30% but I went with clear for the windshield.

That sounds like a very unprofessional tint shop if they do that.

That transponder sticker can be moved also. We tore it off her previous jeep, leaving a bit of sticky and an exposed chip on the cardboard backing. It stuck to the new vehicle and works just fine.

From the outside looking in, it looks like she has a piece of trash stuck to the inside of her windshield though.
