Car & Driver recommends Maverick as a great first vehicle

eh, maybe it was loaded over the top and some dealer 'add ons' (the usual paint/fabric protect and the rest of the overpriced junk) and it was over 50K and was just sitting there, so they knocked off the $3k in dealer junk and dropped the rest of it 6K just to move it out.

Maybe but I know when I was shopping for mine a bit over a month ago there were some random left over 2025's and they weren't all that much less expensive than 2026's.

They may have taken into consideration every single rebate possible which would never be legit for hardly anyone. I've seen that done.

Still 9k seems unlikely.

Back in the day I was taught to drive in a
1967 AMC Rambler, three on the tree.
When I turned 16 and got my operators permit my Dad gave me his Oldsmobile Delta 98.
For crash protection. I didn’t crash it.
I drove the
hell out of that boat.
My second car was a Cuda.
I didn’t get a new one for several more years.

I forgot to mention that my Uncle Sam (not the gov, ha), had the AMC Rambler. I still have home video of him arriving in it at my parents house in 1966 or 67. Oh the days, but we forget that most motors barely made it to 100k before a rebuild.

I must have been privileged. My first car was a 69 Camaro and my second was a 69 Chevelle. Camaro only had a 283 and a power glide 2 speed transmission. The Chevelle on the other hand, my dad helped me build a 350 small block with a racing cam, Holly 4 barrel double pumper, and a 4 on the floor. Unfortunately, all my cars after that were just get me around vehicles. Having kids does that to some of us. Wasn't until many years later I got into dirt bikes and felt insane power again.

And the Ford Pinto was a decent car for what it was, except it was a true rust bucket and a crash hazard ( could explode if hit from the rear ).

I saw a Pinto a couple years ago - I had forgotten how much Glass that thing had, it must have been an oven inside it in the summer...

did some 'sleuthing' or sorts... found this Ford Dealership in the city where the author lives - there's a couple of $6K off Lobos with some 'discount' and 'ford discount' (if you meet the criteria)...so maybe there was a 9k$ as long as you jumped thru whatever other hoops they had on that one. Was that the Rocket motor ?
It was freakin fast.

The Olds 455 was first out in 68, replaced the 425. I rebuilt a 65 98 vert with a 425

We all know Car and Driver charges Ford or any other to "talk" how fantastic a car is

I like the look of the interior (in the Lariat, anyway) more than most people, but the absolute last word I'd use to describe the materials is "rugged."

yep - the great thing about Chevy Vegas is that you could buy a 2-3 year old one for $400 as people couldn't stand the rust and the smoke - and as a youngster it was affordable and you got your first experience with bondo...and with using your brother's used oil from his oil change on his car as the Vega got about 100 miles to the quart. Interiors were great as they're only a couple years old. Actually a fairly reliable and easy to work on vehicle as were most smaller cars back then.

Reliable??? I worked at a g Chevy dealership back then. We kept a separate routing sheet for the Vega. Every one of them experienced engine failure due to silicone impregnated cylinders failing due to antifreeze leaks. We had a limit of 26 Vegas waiting for engine repair at a time. The engine had a die-cast aluminum engine block with a cast-iron cylinder head. Iron and aluminum expand and contract at different rates. The head gaskets failed due to the different expansion rates. In 1975, Chevy installed cast iron cylinder sleeves in the aluminum block and sold the Vega with a then unheard of 50,000 mile engine warranty. The engine update couldn't save the Vega probably due to its rust-bucket reputation.
