Capacitor Jump Boxes

Has anybody used a jump box that uses a capacitor to jump their hybrid Maverick? I have one of these jump boxes but I never needed to use it. I wonder how they work on a hybrid. Not having to charge it appeals to me, though it probably won't work on a totally flat battery.

I would never try one on a totally dead battery.
I’ve got two. I keep them in my warm house and when I go out in the morning to work one goes with me in my back pack and goes inside with me at work.
Lithium does not like the cold.

Will work no issues as your Boosting the 12 Volt battery only. Very few of the Jump Starters have ability to start a completely dead battery as they have safety mechanism to prevent as it will overload the jump starter.

I have an Autowit Supercap 2 supercapacitor jump starter in my Hybrid Maverick.

Mixed results.

Jump started a Ram 1500 (gasoline) at a gas station no issue, started right up. Guys truck wouldn't start after filling up, so this was perfect.

But the other time, a young lady tried to repeatedly start her old Accord until her battery was totally dead. The jump box, even at 100% precharge, could not start it.
Had to get jumper cables to a jeep for her; started right up.

So, I like having it since I don't want to jump anyone/anything else directly from the hybrid, but it has performance limits.

It would jump my own hybrid, but, if the battery is totally dead, nope.

Plus, it takes about 10 seconds once connected to "beep"/internal charge for ready.
Not a problem, but not as fast as hook up traditional jumper cables and immediately try.

I carry this and traditional cables.
Try the Supercapacitor first, and cables as a backup; hope a good Samaritan will jump my truck (hasn't happened yet).
Never cables from my hybrid to jump someone else.

I don't have my maverick yet, and I hope to never have to boost it. But i do have a regular old school jump pack , a lithium NOCO , and now one of these capacitance jump packs. The best one honestly is my 10 year old jump pack, it's basically a small motorcycle battery in a plastic case with booster cables , it's so old it says SEARS on it.

My noco lithium jump pack will start my old 5.7 hemi, but that has failed a few times, as I let it sit in my truck in the cold.

My cheap Chinese capacitance will work, but it's flaky, if the battery is dead, like dead dead, the capacitance jump pack won't work. However it does the job in the most ideal conditions.

My fourth back up, is a pair of jumper cables..

I think Autowit is the one I have. It is the one Scotty Kilmer recommended. I got one of the jump boxes that I ordered from Ford Accessories yesterday. I have had boxes go completely dead on me if I didn't use them, so that is why I got the supercapacitor to begin with. I will carry both along with some jumper cables in the bed. I hope I never need any of it. The one from Ford came with a cigarette lighter adapter. They must expect us to charge them in our vehicles. I thought about putting it under the back seat with the cord running to the outlet in the console so it will charge anytime I am driving. Assuming it isn't hot all the time and drain my battery

The way I understand how these things work is it amplifies the current that is already in the battery so if it is totally dead, there is nothing to amplify. Even with booster cables, you can't jump through a dead battery.

One of the cons of a super capacitor jumper is. Waiting for it to charge up off of a low or dead battery. It could take 15 to 20 minutes. If your main worry is leaving for work in the morning you can keep the super capacitor charger in your house charged up. Taking it out to your truck put it on and it'll start it, with no problem.
Size wise the super capacitor jumper may be larger than your lithium ion based jumper.

The capacitors have to be charged by some source even a dead battery has some power in it. You hook up the super capacitor to the "dead battery and then you have to wait for it to charge the capacitors.

This is my second Schumacher (supposedly a good brand) that has split apart and this one was kept underneath the rear passenger seat. My first one was kept covered from the sun in the rear cargo compartment with the spare tire in my Yaris.
Neither one was in direct sunlight. T

so you dont have to keep them charged until you use them. I have had regular jump boxes go completely dead with ever using them

But there are apparently two kinds of boxes: the ones with a lithium battery, and ones that use the discharged battery to feed a boost converter into a supercapacitor, and a buck convertor to drop it down to 12ish V for starting.

it seems to me that if playing boost/buck games to get enough juice from a discharged battery to run a supercapacitor for starting, it would make sense to include it as part of the vehicle design!

If battery voltage acceptable, start the battery. If low, put up warning, charge the supercapacitor, and then pull the battery out of circuit while the supercapacitor runs the start.

Especially if you're a manufacturer who insists on shipping a battery that rhymes with"rotorcraft" with your vehicles . . .

Like any other rechargeable battery, you do have to maintain them. I've had many years of great service from SLA and Li-Ion types, properly maintained.
