Bought a Maverick FX4 but now I wish I could tow...

I just picked up Maverick from the dealership on Wednesday night 12/29. I ordered my Maverick back in July and at the time I thought ordering the XLT with FX4 (given the larger radiator/engine fan) could tow 4000lbs and that the tow package basically just gave you 7pin connection to the trailer and trailer braking control. It's my own fault for not confirming this with the dealership and only doing research via the Ford.com site. Now that I have picked up the truck I have been told I can only tow 2000lbs. This wouldn't be a big deal except in September of this year I bought my first pop up camper and it has a dry weight of 2270lbs. I am new to both owning a truck and owning a pop up camper. Because I had already ordered my truck and it had been confirmed and I received all of the emails from Ford about production, I just assumed everything would be great... But now I have a pop up camper that I have been told I cannot tow and the whole point of buying this truck was to be able to tow the pop up and take my kids on MTB adventures.

What do I do now?

I've done a little research through these forums and honestly it looks like the main difference other than 7pin/trailer brake control, is the transmission oil cooling. Can this be added after the fact from the dealership? I still have the Tow/Haul option and the larder radiator, but as it stands now I am very disappointed. Obviously this is my fault for not asking questions and also ordering a truck, then months later buying a pop up and just now thinking about tow weight restrictions.

Unfortunately you sell the truck or you sell the pop up. I'd recommend ordering or seeing if any are available in your area with tow option and trade in and pay difference. Or get a ranger.

Perhaps you can take 200 pounds out of the camper.More seriously, you may be fine towing if you don’t +weight to the trailer, tow uphills/long grades, travel early a.m. when cool,& travel v. Conservatively when no one‘s on the road to avoid accidents/liability issues being slightly over weight. Consider leaving in a seasonal location like Jamestown RI

Honestly, used ones are priced higher than msrp. If you paid a markup you might be able to break even. Ive been looking hard all over the southeast because of the markups. Even used xls were priced at over 30k.

The big problem is you might have to wait with a reorder, or just have to go find one on lot that was dealer ordered with 4k. But I tried finding one too and by the time I called it was already sold. I ended up just ordering one.

Order one with 4K. Drive the one you have until it arrives and sell it. You might even end up making a couple thousand dollars in the process.

You forget, one of the other big differences is that the 4k tow has different gear ratio on the rear diff, 3.81 vs 3.64 for non tow package

You can go to Camping World, or any RV Center and get a 7 pin connector and brake controller installed. You can pull over your tow rating if you're really careful on your transmission. Especially if you're not pulling in hills and mountains. However, I will not recommend it, because I do not want to feel responsible should you bork your rig.

My opinion 270 lbs over is nothing. Have a transmission cooler installed just to be safe. Buy the extended warranty as a back up and go. If it doesn't fit your needs after a year your not goung to lose a dime.

I used to see this way too often when I sold cars back in the day. It would cost people thousands to correct their mistake. Luckily for you we are in a huge shortage, and you should be able to sell your Maverick for over MSRP, or trade it in for MSRP or better as well. You might not take a loss at all. Assuming you can find a reasonably priced Maverick out there somewhere.

I am thinking someone posted chart showing fuze chart and think I saw an unused position "Reserved for after market brake controller (30amp??)" Might be designed for us who want brakes for smaller trailers but Ford won't consider 7pin installation for fear of misuse. Do not know but suspect FX4 may not get the transmission cooler because it does not get "a 4k control module" which may turn on/off transmission cooler use. (Presumably this is reason that some purchase both FX4 AND 4K PACKAGES though most that due complaign about paying for both). Some were saying things like "FX4 SHOULD be able to pull 3K trailer" & "some states won't allow trailers over 2k+(??)lbs without brakes. I do not know but you might search this site for several threads which have discussed this. I do think that with the eight speed transmission the primary concern would be rapid shifting at higher speeds which would occur at lower mph due to the FX4 gear ratios. Good luck!

You should be fine towing with the fx4 . it has the 3.63 rear end .the standard rear end on maverick is 2.93 . keep it lower than 3k lbs . a trans cooler can be added if you feel better about it . fx4 should have been rated for 3k lbs towing by ford . This has been discussed on the forum before .

Man that is a tough deal. Make sure you consider if in an accident your insurance can/will deny coverage If loaded heavier that the truck is rated.

I actually have the 4K option on my Mav with little to no need. I have a diesel 3/4 ton to pull my camper 38’ cab per. I purchased my Mav off the lot with dang near every option they could stick on it.

there's a lot more to it than that. You need to have the AWD to get 4K tow package- and it also gives you the IRS with that. As others have noted, there's a different rear end ratio too. You already know about the oil cooler, larger radiator with fan, standard brake controller (also sway control), WELDED on hitch w/ 7 & 4 pin connectors- in other words it's made to SAFELY tow the rated 4,000 lbs.

Don't listen to people telling you you'll be OK if you take it easy- why risk your family for that? There's a reason Ford reversed course and wouldn't allow 4k tow package with just FWD - it's not safe to try it!

It's Winter right now and you got a couple of months you aren't going camping and MTB riding with the boys anyways. IMO don't waste the next couple months adding parts that still won't give you a safe 4k tow package. You could order another Maverick with 4K package at same dealer and work some kind of trade with them (maybe they let you keep this 1 until the next 1 shows up?), or look around for Mavericks in transit to dealers and see if you can snag 1 that is being declined by original purchaser like some people here have done already and sell your current 1 for likely what you paid or even more, or just wait until some stock units start showing up on lots and trade yours for another 1 with 4k tow or some combination of the above moves to get what you thought you were getting in the 1st place. They should be cranking these out at the factory again starting Monday (if they haven't already) and they will become more plentiful as the months go by. Just be patient and persistent and it should work out in the end.

I would look for a 4K checking new listings daily on cars dot com and calling dealers. I would not try to modify my new vehicle to tow over rating. Just my opinion.

I bought a 4K off a pop up dealer order just before it went into production. Took me a month from deposit to in my hands. My 4K is slated to be a trade in for my hybrid when/if it arrives in the spring.
