Not at all IMO. Many people get flat one-piece fiberglass tonneau covers, but those have less height and total volume than a fastback does and don't give the aerodynamic advantage of a fastback either.

As you can see below, they open up wide for easy loading, and effectively becomes a giant SUV like trunk, but since the cab is separated from the bed, you can keep the inside clean. That means no mulch or sod smell or dirt, dirty dogs can hop back there and shed all they want, toss all your fishing gear back there, and so forth that you can spray out with a hose. I've seen cloth "poor-man's" version for Broncos too:

I think the idea with most retractables, is that 99% of the time, its just left in its deployed state. But in the rare cases where you're transporting something that is just too darn tall, like say a boxed 85" TV from Costco or a really tall plant from GardenCenter, then you can take it down and store it neatly. You wouldn't be doing it every day though.
With this fastback setup, couldn't you just leave it up when you need the full bed, and strap the hatch down onto the payload? If they planned on such use, they could just make sure that bottom cross bar is sturdy. (Although I don't see tie-downs anywhere along the bottom.)

This is mine. I went with the Snugtop/Ford canopy. LOve it
How DO tehy address the water ingress, since it's a unibody and there's no gap between the cab and the bed? Is there decent weatherstripping sealing directly to the cab along the front of the topper? Does it leak into the bed?

I can live with the obnoxious ridge at the top, but the box taking up space in the bed area is a no-go.

(edit) I also realized after looking at these photos again that they did away with the tailgate. Screw that noise!

ARE, Leer, or whomever needs to manufacture an AFFORDABLE (<--note this word) option for the Maverick bed, and not one with those fuq-all pop out windows. Give me sliders with screens. $3449 is NOT an affordable option unless you have money to burn.

I had one like this. In the early 80's on a Toyota. Time to join us in the new millennium A.R.E.!

If I can have this type of construction for 2/3 the price of fiberglass, I would choose this. Screw the future, in the future I'm broke.

I could see huge commercial fleets, such as Orkin, being in the market for this. Assuming they could actually buy the trucks...

That is a hot mess and is clearly just their basic cap that they cut short to the Maverick bed length.

Edit: I would be embarrassed displaying that as a company piece.

Doesn’t have the double swing doors which many contractors need. Don’t hate on a cap that’s designed for contractors to be functional.

Its is not supposed to be an overpriced hunk of fibreglass designed to seamlessly turn your truck into a high end SUV

It's the basic bent aluminum contractors cap. Maverick's unibody construction does present challenges as to where to channel the water, but I'm beginning to think this cap or the fiberglass version still seal against the 3 bottom sides of the truck bed - let the water flow where it wants. The fiberglass version can't really seal against the roof because even if tight against the top of the black roof seam trim, this doesn't prevent water from entering further forward under the trim and trickling rearward UNDER the trim. One thing new truck owners (having from transitioned from suv's or vans) have to get used to is that caps leak. And with drop in bed liners while parked front end down a slope, water can pool in the bed, soaking cardboard boxes, wetting cloth drop cloths, rusting tools etc - you really have to get used to less than perfect water tightness especially after some years.

That cap is a case of trying to put a square peg in a round hole, I like function over form, but that is ridiculous. From what I have seen the Maverick isn't going to look good with any kind of cap on it, you can no longer see the truck, just something hanging on the back of it.

Sure but have you seen the price they want for this? I don't like the A.R.E. much, but I'm guessing it's not an arm and a leg.

I personally think that the clamshell of the tailgate and back window are better than french doors.

FYI: Shot a message to A.R.E. regarding availability as soon as I saw this...Their standard "it's happening at some point and we have no info" response was what I got back:

"Hello,

These are in design and testing stage at this time for the new 2022 Ford Maverick. We currently have no ETA until ALL testing has passed. Once all testing has passed our Engineers will release a date for production.

Please keep in touch with your A.R.E dealer as they are updated on new releases.

Thank You

Yeah but if ARE displayed a Maverick anywhere with any accessories and no cap at all this forum would have had their heads on a stake. Just take it for what it is and feel sorry for the poor rep they sent to that show. Explaining that cap will haunt him for the rest of his career. Its ok atkeast they didnt put it on a silver santa cruze!
