Probably because the boost provided by the turbo lessens the affect of high altitude. The reduced atmospheric pressure at high altitude does indeed have a significant effect on a , but less to on a boosted engine naturally aspirated engine
The only affect of altitude on a forced induction engine is slightly delayed spool time, which most people will never notice. Cylinder pressures under boost remain consistent at any driveable altitude.

but he has a hybrid, which (barring interesting modifications) doesn't have a turbo!

Just looked at my manual. The same manual covers both engines. So they just give one recommendation for fuel. It seems that Rather than giving different fuel recommendations for the turbo vs the hybrid, they just give a recommendation that can apply to both. The manual contains information on the stop/start system that the hybrid doesn't have as well as another section with the hybrid specific information that's irrelevant to Ecoboost owners

"Ford Does Half-***** Job on Manuals! Full story at 11:00!"

:teehee:

Ford seems to have a history of sloppy manual writing.

I guess it's the same general phenomenon as the way news outlets have dropped their editing, and so forth (I remember watching in horror, back when I read the paper Wall Street Journal, as the editing failures crept into section C, then B, then A, and finally to the editorial page itself.).

This is child’s play compared to some of the instructions in their repair procedures. And I usually have good reading comprehension skills. But they leave me baffled at times. But GM and Chrysler technicians say theirs are even worse
