Gotta be brutally honest here. The lightest tailgate in the pickup truck world does not need a tailgate assist that does nothing when raising the lightest tailgate in the world.

It is nothing more than a classic case of a half baked solution looking its hardest for a problem.
maybe its so it doesnt slam down every time you open it.......

Thanks, you were exactly right. Unfortunately I stripped the head, so SOL on that piece. Glad it isn't stuck in there or anything. Guess another $50 and another try, right.
You could probably get the assist kit from Amazon for less than 30 bucks. I did. Enemy got the correct Torx bits to get those bolts out.

The assist is so you can pull the handle with one hand and just let the tailgate slowly lower itself. Not for raising it. Makes it easier if your hands are full.

That, and the cool factor, of course. Kinda like those toilet seats that s-l-o-w-l-y lower themselves. ;)

I got one of those!! Mated that seat to one of those higher sitting toilets. What a combo that makes.!! You would love it.

Tip that I used: I realized on first try the nut was not gripping the tailgate enough and the bolt had way too much loctite on it.

First I put the bolt in my wire wheel grinder and buffed off most of the locker. Then I put the nut in my vise and defined the flats a little more with a fine file.

Then I used a clip removal tool to apply pressure outward pulling the nut into the groove. Once it was gripping correctly, I tightened the daylights out of it!
