Just got another cracked windshield requiring replacement. The first time it cost over a grand because it has to be calibrated for all the modern technology. Got the same quote again yesterday.

My question is: is the technology really necessary for the vehicle to operate? Can I live without it? I've never needed accident avoidance technology in the previous 50 years of driving.

Can you live without the technology?
You can, but you would have to go back and buy an older vehicle.
Is the technology necessary?
Probably not, but you own a new vehicle. It's all tied in and here to stay.
I'm sure windshield can be replaced without the camera being calibrated.
You would have to find an installer who would do the work and risk a lawsuit by not calibrating the safety system.
Then you would have to get used to being reminded constantly by the truck, that your safety system is not working.

If all else fails I still have a bicycle.

I'm 70 and I still have one.
Because we live in the foothills, it is electric.😉
There's probably some type of chip in it too.

Living in AZ where rocks are a daily occurrence I would never forgo comprehensive with full glass coverage. It’s not that expensive and all the new Windshields now are acoustic or need tuning or have devices Splayed all over them. I get my windshield replaced every year just because of the tiny chips that make reflective light at night so annoying and my insurance never has a problem with it.
Add it for your future rock attacks

I mean, you could get 0 comprehensive from your insurance. I would say it's already kind of too late for that if you've paid for two windshields.

I mean...How bad is the current crack...or "Hit"?. We just did away with state inspections here in Texas...so a previous hit/crack on the driver's side will not keep us off the road like in the past. Because a failed inspection wouldn't allow you to get a registration sitcker to be legal. I've got four hits on mine and sealed them myself so they wouldn't spread. Haven't so far. I'll eventually get a new windshield.....but not today Mr. Rock....Not today......

If windshield install and camera recalibration are charged separately, you can recalibrate the camera yourself with a Windows laptop, OBDII adapter, and Forscan. Not particularly hard.

I would say good luck finding a glass company that would install a new windshield without requiring the calibration. Furthermore, it's very unlikely that an insurance company would approve a claim for just the glass replacement.

I often wonder how windshield reacts whenever any vehicle does an angled approach to a driveway, given vehicle's unibody construction, twisting at a driveway upwards angled approach.

I don’t tailgate dump trucks or large trucks or people pulling a trailer or landscaping companies nor do I drive fast on gravel roads so I hope to minimize the chance of getting my windshield damaged but I know it could happen but then again I live in Florida where windshield replacements on insured vehicle are free with no deductibles and they will replace them in your driveway (Safelite Repair Satelite Replace)

I just repaired mine over the weekend, a trip to the parts place, $21 and 90 min later, can't even tell there was a chip... just read/followed the instructions and took my time.

a local installer came and replaced mine for under $300 dollars, didn't have to recalibrate if I remember correctly, now though I noticed there is a lot of popping when cold and in twist,no cracks so far.
